1000 images

After a few weeks of planning, importing, rearranging and clipping, this project is done. It's a poster, a BIG poster: 82.97 x 107.22 cm / 32.667 x 42.213 inches.

...which is pretty huge. I've taken 1000 images from the FF8 discs (all are ripped from the game), and started playing around with a lot of ideas. This is what I came up with. It took a lot of careful planning, a lot of calculations and a LOT of waiting for my computer to be done with saving, moving or adjusting the huge files.

I've uploaded the complete, the huge PNG file for your viewing pleasure here.
A much smaller (but more bandwidth-friendly) version can be found here.

WARNING: if the huge PNG file doesn't show crystal clear in your browser, download it to your computer.

And finally, the ready-to-print file, which is in .TIFF format, is ready for you to take to your local print shop and ask them to print the damn thing. Too bad I can't ask money for this (everything on this poster belongs to SE, pretty much), since it was quite a task, but I'm not in it for the money. Here it is, though the .tiff file is zipped, since it's 485 MB. The .zip file is 'only' 167 MB.

PS: every image is unique, there are no duplicates.

I really do hope you used a program to assist in the collage portion of the 1k images though.

Balamb Garden was awesome. I wished university was like that.

QUESTION: I know there's a model viewer for FF8 PC (and PS I guess) - I assume the BGs were ripped raw directly via these tools? So no in-game models would be present.

EDIT: And what RAM do you have on your machine? Looks like I can't open the full PNG from my work laptop, 2gb RAM, haha!

FF8 is my favorite, and when I found a program that allowed me to rip those pre-rendered backgrounds, I felt like I could create something nice with it. It's gonna look great on my wall

And yeah, I used Adobe Bridge to import all of these into Illustrator, in which I created all of the clipping masks, before exporting it to Photoshop to create the final files.

The program is called FF8mimic, I've had it for like, 7 years or so. Qhimm, Zophar's domain - try those terms into google. The program is very handy and user-friendly, you can see the entire script on each background (which reveals strange things such as a Retry card rule), change POV in some, add or remove layers of objects etc.

Basically I popped in every disc, ripped every unique file (since some things, like the Tomb of the Unknown King, are on every disc), and I thought I was done. But then there's those images that change significantly if you add or remove a layer or component. It saves your files as PNG, can't be easier really.

I have 4 gig RAM and thank god I have a 64-bit machine.

And yeah, uni like B-Garden would be the bestest thing ever.

Ah yes FF8mimic, my memories returning to me now. Qhimm/Zophar's Domain too back when I was heavily into the RPG Maker/MUGEN communities.
