New Car Tires

So I'm looking to buy some new tires for my car. I live in Utah and it snows during the winter here (the primary reason I'm buying new ones.) I've never bought new tires before, although I'm sure someone here can point me in the right direction. I'm looking for something that's good in the snow (and that I can leave on during the summer) and reasonably priced, although really any input would be well received. Car is a 2001 Honda Civic.

Put some snow tires on the steel rims you have, then pick up some 15" or 16" rims with summer tires from some dumbass kid "upgrading".

I'm in utah as well. My step dad always knows all this crap so I called and asked him. (he used to work as a sales rep for a tire company) What part of Utah are you in and he said he'd try and recommend a place. He said for tires, you basically get what you pay for. Most expensive but will last the longest would be some Michelin all season tires, followed by BG Goodrich.

Little outside the valley, but he knows the owner and says that's where he'd go. You can probably call them and say you want an all season tire, and they can lay out your options and costs. Then you could go somewhere closer and know about what they *should* be charging you.

I can tell you my Michelin all seasons are absolute champs in the snow.

Tirerack.com for the tires. Front page has the option for you to input your make and model and it does the rest. Buy a simple set of used rims but make sure they are strong enough to deal with the bad winter weather. A lot of people forget that if your rims need to be able to handle the weather the same as the tires. Tire rack can also help you with that. Just have a shop put them on the wheel. Can do it at a flat fix place.

Also if you ever do buy used tires make sure they're not more than 6 years old. People think they're getting great deals on used tires then suddenly boom blowout on the freeway (and possible crash).

I won't recommend all season tires, although i'm using those right now, because I'm cheap ass. Get snow tire for winter would be the best.

I picked up a set of Hankook Optimo 727 all-seasons a few months ago. The tires actually perform surprisingly well for not being snow tires, but a KC winter is quite different from Utah.

All seasons drive like shit in snow no matter the brand. It's acceptable if inclement weather is intermittent or you're always driving on salted roads, but just keep in mind that "all season" is a misnomer.

Take a look at Tirerack.com. Get a set of decent rims (Again, Tirerack.com OZ series are great), get some Michelin Pilot Sport's for spring/summer/early fall, and pick up some bridgestone blizzak's for winter driving.
