    Home Sauna Questions

Just purchased one and had it installed today, I have two questions, since all this bullshit manual has is instructions on how to sit properly and place towels under your butt before sitting.

1: What is the ideal temperature to put it at after hitting the treadmill for a few miles?

2: What is the absolute highest temperature I can put this at without damaging skin?

    Ahhh,

I love saunas, really its all about comfort for you. I have a finnish sauna. I usually keep mine in the 160-180 degree range if I am going to stay in for a bit. If you are just going to shock yourself before or after a workout you could go as high as 190. But really you just need to figure out what you are willing to stand.

Enjoy many hours of sweaty goodness.

quick edit: all these temperatures are Fahrenheit.

I can't help but question the necessity of that edit.

The IQ of a select few on this forum would feel the need to point it out.

Don't point it out, and you won't have to make the effort ever again. Best solution if you ask me.

I'll tell you what not to do!

On 7 August 2010 Vladimir Ladyzhensky and Finnish five-time champion Timo Kaukonen passed out after six minutes in the sauna, both suffering from terrible burns and trauma. They were both rushed to the hospital but Ladyzhensky died en route. Kaukonen was reported to suffer from extreme burn injuries, and his condition was described as critical, but stable. Kaukonen woke up from coma two months after the event. His respiratory system was scorched, 70% of his skin was burnt and eventually his kidneys failed as well.
The starting temperature is 110 degrees Celsius (230 F). Half a liter of water will be poured on the stove every 30 seconds.
I enjoy my sauna in around 100 degrees celsius (212 F or so), max. More than that gets slightly uncomfortable.

160-180 F is perfectly fine. I think you'll know when shit is about to hit the fan, honestly lol.

How much does a sauna cost to install in your house?

I've used 3 'public' saunas on a regular basis before and all were used mainly by naked old men and/or gay guys looking to hook up neither of which seems applicable to me :\

I hear in Europe the saunas are co-ed and quite a trip. Maybe I should just move there?

I can't speak for all of "Europe" but every single public sauna I've seen in UK/Ireland has been a gay meeting place and I've steered clear of them. Gym saunas have been pretty decent though seeing as the people who use them are paying for the gym membership too. Public saunas in Finland usually have strict times for men/women/families or just have separate sauna rooms, not that most people use them anyway since practically everyone has one at home unless you live in some student flats/otherwise cheap apartments. Only people you see at public saunas are old geezers and businessmen/women who have booked the whole place for a meeting. No idea about Turkish style saunas or elsewhere on the continent.

I'm a sauna wuss, 70-80C is my perfect chill out temperature but then I can just sit and relax there for a good while waiting on sausages to cook (if you have a sauna with a wood burning stove you just have to cook some ossum sauna sausages while you're there and afterwards enjoy them with some beer and lots of mustard/ketchup). Ahhh.

Excellent advise. Also don't forget to install a spruce forest (for the proper atmosphere) and a lake near the sauna so you can go swim afterwards.

Well, the sauna itself was only about $1850 the two guys tried charging me 300 for assembly and all of that jazz. Needless to say it wasn't part of the agreement, a quick call to their boss changed the story lol, funny how 150 each turns into 60 combined. It's a two seat with an LCD screen and stereo in it, pretty nifty if you ask me.

If you've got some skill as a carpenter I'm sure you can build one over the spring or summer using plans online. Considering the cost of lumber these days it might be cheaper to buy a pre-fab (economies of scale on mfg's end), but it would be a pretty cool backyard project.
