Need a cheap car, any ideas?

So here's the story. My girlfriend lives on campus at a college 15 minutes away and has no car. I live at home and have a car and for the last 5 months I have been her ride along with her friend but it's time she got a car. She is getting her tax return from last years summer job and she plans to buy a car with it but it's only 800 dollars after some bills. How feasible is it that she can find a car that will last her 6 months? Any sites other that craigslist that would be worth a visit?

The catch with this whole thing is it's hard for her to find a job right now due to all jobs around the college because they are all taken and the shitty economy in Michigan isn't helping which means we can't save up some money and get a car for 2-3 grand.

So any ideas?

800 bux won't get you much, honestly. How feasible is it for you to sit on that money for 6 months and put a little more to the car then? That's what I'd recommend for now, you can find a decent old Honda or Toyota for between 1k and 1.5k in Missouri, but idk what that will buy you up there.

Depending on the roads she'd have to drive, maybe a moped? They tend to have very few additional costs past gas (don't need to insure 'em, etc). Big thing is that they aren't legal as highway vehicles (particularly since they have to be 50cc or less and not go over like 30MPH).

Main thing with a car is that even if you found a decent vehicle for under $800, the associated costs will probably start to add up a lot.

if either of these is possible, I'd do that instead. honestly 800 is so little even if you find a car for that price it's probably going to require additional money to handle any maintenance on the car (and there will be lol).

on top of what others say did she take into account insurance and gas money? old cars like that tend to be gas guzzlers so gotta keep that in mind too.

Gas is 3.95$ here in NY now, not sure how much it is near you. No reason to drop 800$ on anything, because anything you get will just be a shit pile of bolts that will cost you another 2k to even keep running for an entire year not even counting gas/insurance or w/e you need.
