ALBANY, New York (Reuters) – Governor Andrew Cuomo made same-sex marriages legal in New York on Friday, a key victory for gay rights ahead of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections.

New York will become the sixth and most populous U.S. state to allow gay marriage. State senators voted 33-29 on Friday evening to approve marriage equality legislation and Cuomo, a Democrat who had introduced the measure, signed it into law.

The legislature spent the whole week working out this bill. Cuomo made it a priority and its passing was inevitable. Most of the negotiations had to do with making sure churches could not be sued for refusing to marry gays, and that religious adoption organizations could refuse to allow them to adopt.

but yea, this is huge news. NY is the 3rd most populous state in the union, with some 30 million people (roughly 10% of the entire US population). Supposedly this ruling doubled the amount of people living in states that allow gay marriage, meaning 20% of americans now live in a state with marriage equality.
