God Emperor Doom.

Effectively, external forces (the beyonders) are smashing universes together, and only one survives this "incursion". Once the final two universes are left (Marvel 616 Universe and "Ultimate Marvel" Universe) they battle to survive their incursion but ultimately end in a stalemate and are destroyed. While this is happening, Doctor Doom manages to kill the beyonders, take their beyond multiversal power, and use it to cobble together all the pieces of universes left into a planet dubbed 'Battleworld'. Doom rules with ultimate power, and those who oppose him have to figure out how to literally defeat a god to try and restore what was.

the really super short is that the multiverse is collapsing one universe at a time (this is why them using the term "incursion" was so important in Dr Strange 2). The 616 tries to stop it but ultimately fails and everyone dies. But behind the scenes Doom was secretly working on a plan and basically cobbles together bits and pieces from all the realities into his own, where he installs himself as god and rules over everything.

It was the big conclusion to one continuous story running for 8 years thru Fantastic Four, Avengers, plus a shit ton of other comics (all written by Jonathan Hickman) and eventually culminated in Secret Wars. To give you an idea of how big of a deal it was treated, Marvel literally cancelled every single series they had when it kicked off. They made a bunch of spinoff titles related to the main series, but while Secret Wars was happening the entire comic universe was nothing but that storyline, everything else was stopped.

That is also assuming they are going with the more recent version. The original Secret Wars was various heroes and villains being transported to a random battleworld to fight things out by the Beyonder.

Hickman's titles leading into it would be best:

Avengers Vol. 5
New Avengers Vol. 3
Infinity

Then if you have time his Fantastic Four and FF (Future Foundation) runs are useful as well.

If you don't want to go thru everything I'd start with the Fantastic Four part and skip the Ultimates Stuff. Secret Warriors is dope but not an essential element of the later stuff. Fantastic Four Dark Reign is where the main plotline starts

Also definitely don't skip Fantastic Four. It's great.
