FIV Cat

So as the title says, I have an FIV cat. Adopted him a few months ago and at the time he was adopted we didn't know that he had FIV. He's a great cat, but what I am wondering is if anyone here has had or have an FIV positive cat. Just wondering how you guys handled everything and such. Probably going to have to take him to the vet tomorrow since he is getting a weepy eye. So I figured I would ask to see if anyone has some exp in the matter. Thanks

Hopefully you dont have any other cats as the FIV cat can spread the disease. Your FIV cat can live a normal life provided he has great care, proper nutrition, and a healthy environment to live in. Unfortunatly if he gets sick or isnt feeling well his condition is only exacerbated by his FIV. He could succumb easily to any minor healtth issue. Unfortuately it sounds like you adopted him from less than reputable rescue as they should have drawn blood to check for health issues such as FIV. I would personally put him to sleep as there is a huge financial risk in his care and certain quality of life issues if he gets sick. Also IMO better to end it before you get too attached so you can minimize your personal pain in dealing with the matter. Make sure you dont let him outside so he doesnt give the whole neighborhood cat aids.

By adopt, do you possibly mean buy from a pet store? We bought a kitten from one about a year and a half ago. He seemed to have health problems from the start, the weepy eye you mentioned being one of the first things we noticed. Vet said he was okay but we did not do a blood test at that time. Fast forward about four months, and we had to rush him to the vet because he could barely walk on his own. Vet first diagnosed him with central nerve disease. Blood work later tested positive for FIV. We had him put down a day later.

I would say his health took a sharp decline over the course of a month. It was very painful to watch him suffer, as he was so loving and playful when we bought him. Though it may sound harsh and will be an emotional kick to the teeth, I strongly recommend having him put to sleep ASAP. You don't want your cat to suffer. There's nothing that can be done for FIV. You have my deepest sympathies, and I wish you the best in dealing with this.

On a more serious note(of which I am capable of sharing): FIV is a very serious condition. You can manage it for awhile, but it will eventually overwhelm it, and it will start to suffer. I'm not going to suggest that you preemptively put the cat out of it's misery, but it is going to come up sooner or later, and you have my utmost sympathy for that. I know how it feels to lose a pet you bond with. I was in junior high, and I adopted a terrier mix from a well-reputed shelter, bonded with him too, the little guy eventually started throwing up greenish/white foam and he was no longer his rambunctious self. I took him to the vet, and he had parvo. They tried treating him for parvo so they didn't actually put him to sleep either, he just died in the middle of the night while they were trying to treat him. That really hurt me, Celestialstrife. It hurt me so goddamn much. I am sorry that you are going to have to go through it too. Give the little fella lots of love while you can, alright?

By Adopt, meaning adopting him from a shelter, and ya I am kinda pissed that the shelter I adopted him from didn't do a test, as he was a high risk cat for FIV. He's a 8 year old male and hes huge! And no I'm not going to simply put him to sleep because he does have FIV. I'm going to do all I can that he has a comfortable life forever how long he does live. I've read some articles already where some cats with FIV have lived till 14+ years. I know it's going to be tough on that day when he does passes, I just lost one of my cats last year to diabetes and that really tore me apart. What I really wanted to know from anyone with an FIV cat was if they had any special food or meds to give him so he is healthy. I'll upload some pics asap for Solanis.

Ya he's like a snowshoe mix, but we named him Katsu since he's pretty huge/fat. Trying to get that bastard to loose some weight too.

Had a tomcat with FIV. He was a bit down for about a month on catching it (didn't eat much etc - but loved having company). Then he bounced back and lived for another 12 years. Even in his last year (of 23 years) he was fighting and killing mink. He was a tough cat.

Edit: I should add that he was a rare case and had an immune reaction to the virus.
