Perhaps I've been spoiled by their recent upgraded offerings, but I was hoping for a visually enhanced version of the game like they did with FF1/2/4 on the PSP, and apparently 5 soon.

I loved FFVI, but I feel like I've paid SE for this same game 4 or so times in the last 15 years. Maybe an upgraded release for the PSP or something would be worth looking into, but seeing as I already own 3 copies of the game, not dying to hand them money for this release.

This goes for a lot of the Final Fantasy titles. However, that includes re-writing everything so it would make sense in voice/action instead of pausable text, which isn't as instant-$ as it would seem at first glance. But believe you me, I want this badly.

Um, it is easier and less time($) consuming than creating a new storyline from scratch...so in that comparison, instant $$$.

However much I'd also love to see it, I agree with Mioko.

No matter how much is saved from the basic story/game design concept already being in place, the budget required to adequately update, remake, and add additional material (because there's no way they'd remake it that high profile without a ton of additional stuff, not even going into the voice acting/re-scripting, so that it wasn't simply a rehashing in HD) would still probably come out to the same amount it would cost them to make a new FF game, even if they saved some time from having previous source material to work with.

I think it much more likely that they'll do a milder updated version on a handheld, eventually. The only older FF I could ever see them actually full blown remaking and rebuilding for a console in HD is VII, because of the ridiculous demand they've gotten over the years for it and some desire inside SE for the project, but even that's a crapshoot as to whether it'll ever actually happen.

I'm pretty sure that's the exact same reason they've mentioned that they can't do an FFVII remake on current gen consoles, the budget to remake those games, even with the story in place, is pretty close to making one from scratch, plus you lose the ability to draw in new players. That is to say, everyone that loves FF may or may not buy something like FFXIII Versus, whereas you're more limited in potential buyers (people that loved the original will buy it, haters will ignore it) with re-releases.

I loved Final Fantasy VI, but I am 26 now, and I have played through it a dozen or so times in different incarnations over the last 15 years. I can't bring myself to do it anymore when there are so many other games out there to play.

And as much as I'd love to see a remake of this game (more than any other FF game) I can't decide if it's me being pragmatic to wish for a FF4-style DS/PSP remake instead of a full fledged HD version (which seems exceedingly unlikely)

If it is the Anthologies version, then no. It was pretty much just a poorly optimized SNES port with cutscenes plugged in here and there.

Only really unoptimized in the sense it had disc read times, and long response times bringing up the menus and such. These problems will obviously be eliminated being a downloaded game, and not a disc based one. I think it will be fine, perhaps the best version released.
