    Mattress Shopping Advice

So I'm moving to my own place in a few weeks, and need a bed. I've lived on my own (with roommates) before but in those pre-furnished apartments, so they came with beds. I've never shopped for a bed and have no idea what I'm looking for.

I'm hoping to find a cheap frame somewhere, but really invest in a mattress (over other furniture) since it'll last longer and I would really like to sleep well most--if not every--night.

    I found this sale online:

    http://www.mattressfirm.com/Serta-Ap...Firm-P253.aspx

$598 for a Serta Memory Foam Queen Mattress set sounds like a good deal, but like I've said, I know fuck all about mattresses and what to look for.

I heard the mattress giant will throw out a old mattress at the end of every work day.

but seriously, craigslist is a good spot for a cheap frame. My girlfriend just bought a $700-$800 steel frame for $250 off craigslist, that is nearly brand new.

The markup on mattresses is stupid high. Dont pay sticker price ever you can always jew them down. There is literally 10+ mattress stores in my town with a new one every two weeks as of lately. Play the stores against each other.

I bought a "malm" bedroom set from Ikea (cheap for just the frame) and bought a novaform (compare to tempurpedic) memory foam mattress from costco (they go on sale regularly and are priced well).

When I used to live by myself/single I would just put the mattress and box spring on the floor. But rails are usually cheap. I want to say better bedding has good deals. If not try http://www.1800mattress.com/

If you get a new mattress, I'd recommend getting one of these. It'll provide a moisture barrier and limit the accumulation of oils/skin cells in the mattress, which goes a long way toward keeping nasty stuff from growing in it. I've used one since I bought my mattress five-ish years ago, and it would look brand new if it didn't have a dent on my side due to my sleeping habits. They make them for pillows too, but they're more noticeable.

As for a mattress, my advice would be to go to a store and spend a good minute or more laying on each mattress until you find something comfortable, or comfortable enough for the money you're willing to spend.

For a new mattress, I would recomment going to different stores and lay on a bunch of different ones and see which ones work for you. Also pay attention to sales, I hit up sleeptrain during a big sale, got 12months 0% interest and a free frame included with my matress for me and my wife. My only regret was not going with a king instead of a queen.

You can get the frame and box springs from Sam's Club dirt cheap. Hell you can even get the mattress there dirt cheap as well.

    serta is cool.

you really need to go into the store and see what you like, it also helps to get a good deal like people have suggested most places will match and beat other stores and almost all the stores sell the same brands sometimes with unique part numbers. a lot of places will give you a free bed frame if you aren't looking for anything other than a frame to hold the bed

dunno if you got sleep train where you live but they've earned my business for the last two beds i purchased and i plan to purchase all future beds from there too from my personal experiences with them
