RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech says gunshots have been reported on campus, and authorities are seeking a suspect.

The campus-wide alert at 12:36 p.m. said: "Gun shots reported- Coliseum Parking lot. Stay Inside. Secure doors. Emergency personnel responding. Call 911 for help."

The suspect is described as white male wearing gray sweat pants, gray hat with neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.

A message left with the university wasn't immediately returned. Campus police referred all questions to the university.

A student gunman killed 32 students and faculty and then shot himself on the campus in 2007.

Well, it is reading day today, so comparably few students about. Though he was headed towards Vetmed, and they have a different schedule (not that I'd expect that was his intended destination, just that it's in the direction).

As someone who had a ton of friends go there and visited all the time, yes. It is incredibly depressing.

Apparently it was just a routine traffic stop, and the guy decided to open fire. I've heard a ton of rumors, including that he has body armor, and that the officer was shot in the head. It originally started at the football stadium, and moved a half mile towards "The Cage", the area where people park all of their cars.

Just heard over the police scanner that there were shots fired in the Performing Arts building, which is right next to Macbryde (which is on the opposite side of campus from lane and the cage, literally a 10 minute walk).

Interesting timing..... I'm sitting in the middle of a "active shooter response" class at work.

I hope it's truly not a active shooter situation, and that the 2 victims are OK.

That'd be clear on the other side of campus. Original incident was right near McComas (student gym/health center), presumably was pulled over from the traffic circle there (at least, that's the part of the parking lot that got roped off).

My sister goes to VT, didn't get any info but she sent a text to everyone she knows that she was safe and away from campus before I even heard it on the news.

Seems as if they get at least one crazy with a gun per year on that Campus. Sounds just about right for Virginia. Hope everyone's alright, though; one of my exes was there when the first big shooting went down. That wasn't very fun.
