anyone consider themselves a good singer? songs you enjoy singing?

I took a course way back, a little 3 month thing at the Conservatory called Singing from Scratch and learned some extremely basic techniques, mainly focusing on abdomen strength and signing from there rather than forcing it from the throat which is what most of those tone-deaf idiots do on You Wish You Had Talent Idol Island Challenge Americaland III

anyway this morning while singing in the shower for the first time in a while, I found I had returned to my old dilemma of trying to figure out which is my ideal range and for lack of a better term, where my relaxed octave is

by default I sing high, like an alto-tenor though not in any operatic sense, but I find my voice wavers less when I sing lower. My high notes when I sing high definitely falter

aside from sitting down with a singing coach, anyone have some tips for novices on how to best utilize their strengths or how to determine said strengths?

I find I can sing a lot of the Cranberries' music and early Coldplay (first 2 albums) but holy crap I can never make that one transition in Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead

on a side note, anyone have some songs they love to belt out in the shower?

You should rap lose yourself half a beat off the whole time, then drop the mic.

I used to sing in my senior vocal and jazz groups, and I recommend you work on your diaphragm support of notes. Ways you can do this is to do a lot of singing exercises, there's probably a bunch on YouTube, and then just practise those transitions, using the muscles in your diaphragm to "lift" them. Hard to explain really, but they'll make your range stronger, help on the high notes, and make you more confident on transitions.

No idea what songs you should sing, but Sinatra is always fun

so long as you enjoy yourself, that's good enough for me

I find the worst singers are the people that lack confidence to even try and they falter because they give up and don't follow through and their voice either cracks or slips

that song is really fun to sing, and generally within my range but yes that high note is quite the challenge and I admit I go for it a bit tongue in cheek

Which transition? The heavier part towards the end or the part where he breaks in to falsetto in the verses "fake pla-*transition*-astic Earth"?

I sing but not professionally, just usually along with playing guitar. Prefer stuff that lets me have more freedom in the vocals though, like Damien Rice or Brand New. Coldplay isn't bad but a little too easy, Radiohead is a lot more challenging though, Street Spirit is a pretty good one to practice vibrato on.

Coheed is awesome to sing along to but you have to rock the falsetto to do it, only a few of their songs are able to be done without it. I'd do it more often but the tone of my falsetto sounds like shit compared to Claudio's.

I love to sing, am pretty good at it but lost my broad range and diaphragm support after high school.
Though pretty much all I listen to is faggy jpop.

Incidentally, I am singing tonight and tomorrow at a Madrigal dinner show the OSU medieval/renaissance performer's guild is putting on.

me and my friend rock a mean total eclipse of the heart, which is hilarious because of the calibre of desire in the lyrics and the fact that we are 2 best buds for like 16-17 years and he wouldn't know how to be gay if he tried
