Almost killed a cat and possibly a bunch of people. I put some food in a skillet and tossed some stuff in the trash. Trash was full so thought while the food was heating up I would toss it down the garbage chute which is right outside the door. Open door toss in trash turn around to step back inside and *click* door shut and it auto-locks when it shuts. I am in shorts, no phone, no keys, no phone on me.
Food is on the stove and I immediately know I have to do something before the pan catches fire and the apartment goes up in flames. Rush to super and to building owners places but no one is answering. Get a guy to open his door on second floor he calls them and no answer. Cant get hold of anyone with a key.
I rush back to the 8th floor and it is very smokey smelling so I get a lady to call 911 and the fire department shows up and bust open the door and the pan was on fire but the fire had not spread past the stove at this point. Minimal damage and it was done.
Now for the weirdest things. First the door looks untouched. I didn't get to go up with them to see how they opened it but the lock looks like it imploded and the solid metal lock is just destroyed, but the door is not touched at all and has no damage just needs a lock replacement. The second thing is this isn't my apartment. A friend is out of town and had me come over to take care of his cat who is freaked out now. I think he won't be happy when he finds out.
I had it pretty good, while the locksmith was replacing the lock he kept getting calls to see if he could respond to them from his store. Millions of people in NYC so always someone locked out. One of the calls was a woman who had the door lock on her and she was stuck outside her house and he baby was locked inside.
