Extra Life 2012 - Donations for the Children's Hospital of OC

On an annual basis, Extra Life—a gamer-themed donation drive that concludes with a 24-hour gaming marathon on October 20th—collects thousands of dollars, all of which go directly to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. This year, I'll be one of the many participants in the 2012 marathon

During this drive, I'll aim to raise at least $250 by October 20th, 2012, for the Children's Hospital of Orange County. Already, I've reached the $115 mark, but I have less than a month to go; if anyone here on BG is looking for a cause worthy of their dollars, I've got one for you.

100% of the donated funds will be funneled directly to CHOC. This well-regarded children's hospital tackles practically everything a child could go through, from the mundane to the catastrophic. They're going through a growing period right now, which should help them shift from providing local care to becoming recognized as one of the finest children's hospitals in the nation. Naturally, your donations can help.

If you're interested in donating, or would like to pursue further information, here's all of the relevant links:

My personal page, where you may donate as little as $1, or as much as you'd like:

Beyond that, some of you may be wondering: what am I going to play for 24 hours straight?

"Final Fantasy XI" is a definite. I've never retired from the game, and twenty-four hours of gameplay ought to be right up my alley. If I switch off, though, I'll bet I'm going to fool around a little in WoW, as I'm already enjoying Pandaria. What about StarCraft, you ask? Who knows—I just might. It's a good reason to finally firmly acclimate myself to the franchise.

Streaming video probably will not be an option, but I plan on communicating with my fellow gamers by other means, such as utilizing BG's Chat (where I've rarely stepped), being on Steam for messaging, and whatever else I can think of.

In advance, I thank anyone who wants to contribute for their donation. As mentioned, every dollar given will go directly to the Children's Hospital of Orange County. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Donated $25.00. Any donation that helps out kids is a worthy one in my opinion.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    Thank you!

Already, I've surpassed the $250 goal, and it hasn't even been 24 hours since I originally posted. You've all helped immensely. As for those just viewing this thread, more donations will be absolutely welcome. If you feel like sharing this with friends, feel free to do so, too.

Not much, but I was able to donate 15$ Kick some ass sea bass in SC 2 !

Nice to donate to something like this. I know how it is having a child that went through a lot of medical issues. Son is a little over 2yrs old, but has already racked up a good 300,000+ in med expenses.

Hah, you've all taken my total donations higher than the captain's! I'll have to rib him about this later. He left FFXI for FFXIV, which I still tease him for. I'll have to note how a predominantly FFXI-related forum has shown him what for...

It looks like my captain's pulled ahead in donations again. Hmm. That's going to complicate my picking on his MMO of choice...

Regardless, here's a small video featuring some of the patients at Children's Hospital of Orange County showing their gratitude. Since everyone who donated to my campaign is a part of that, you should see it too.

Link removed. Thank you for donating!

As mentioned earlier, one of the titles I'll assuredly be playing is "Final Fantasy XI," but there's a good chance I'll get a little WoW in there. Other members will be playing not only WoW, but other online games of their choice (such as SC2, fittingly), plus card games, board games, and so on.

I hope to hop into BG's Chat at that time, and I'll see if there's other means of talking to anyone who happens to be around while it's going on. Furthermore, if you'd like to be donating every hour during the marathon itself, you can set that up on the same page as in the OP, too.

I thought that some of you may be interested in where I'll be doing my gaming; a lot of it will be on a rather spacious desk. It's a good thing I've got a lot of room on it for caffeinated beverages, as I'll likely need them.

Also, if you'd like to share this with anyone else, feel free—especially if you're all for the FFXI versus FFXIV effort. Sure, it's truly about the kids, but how dare he come up from behind and surpass me?! Gah!

As there's only a few days left, I've looked into what I can do to sweeten the deal for anyone that chooses to donate. Fortunately, there's a little something I'll be able to toss someone's way.

To show a little more appreciation for those who have donated and signed with their real names, and to those who will in the future, I'm now able to put the following on offer:

Since the drive is over, a winner was chosen, and their prize rewarded. Thank you for contributing!

As I don't know the real names of BG's donators ahead of time, and to keep this raffle fair in relation to those who have already donated, only established members of BG will be considered eligible; no one who registers within the next few days and tries to claim ownership of a donation will be considered. There are some people outside of BG who have donated that I can verify separately, and I will do so if one of them is chosen. I hope, though, that no one will try to pull anything, given the important nature of this donation drive.

As for my own full disclosure:

This is not being officially endorsed by any company, and if anyone is curious, I do not win anything for successfully delivering a higher donation amount. As a premium participant in the drive, I do get a T-Shirt, but that's the only material thing; everything else is sentimental, as far as I'm concerned. The only reason I'm pushing this hard is because I believe in this, and I'm grateful to everyone else who does, too.

Depending upon how many people contribute to the pot from here until Friday, I'll see if there's anything else I can add in. To those interested in the raffle: good luck!
