There's no way they can do this in movie format and do it any justice. That and the fact that Brian Herbert is involved, who's the same guy producing terrible schlock Dune prequel books for the last fifteen years, is not encouraging.

The 1984 movie was a travesty(Voice amplifiers that shoot people!). The 2000 scifi mini-series was better plot wise, but low budget. The right way to do it would be series television, but the budgets would easily spiral out of sight quickly. Not to mention Dune is so ripped off by other stories that it would be difficult for it to stand alone at this point in time, since those other ripoffs have been around for so much longer.

I'm a huge fan of the first Dune book and it's probably one of the best scifi novels ever, if not #1. The 3rd book was good but not great, 4th book was almost too weird to follow, and the 5th book was only passable due to Miles Teg.

The Sci-Fi channel miniseries was great. While the budget for the 2000 mini-series was low ($20 million), it was still done well. The sequel, Children of Dune, has the same budget, and was able to get more out of it.

If nothing else Chalamet would be well cast as Paul

I heard about this not long ago. I thought, 'Oh cool. Maybe they will finally make a decent Dune movie.' Now like the above poster said that I see Brian Herbert is producing that is not good. I still have my fingers crossed.

If I see the movie on cable sometime I will watch part of it if I want a laugh. I also agree it's one of the best scfi novels ever. I would put it in my top 5.

Edit: On Wikipedia it says the producers are going for a "faithful adaptation" of the novel and that Brian Herbert is only a technical advisor. So I have hope.

I thought 3rd book was pretty great and 4th maybe my favorite because I'm a weirdo. This is my favorite series and I'm really skeptical about the adaptation. Everyone loves the first book but Herbert made a calculated choice to end it the way it did so he could in the second book flip the script on the hero and messiah idea. Either way so much of Dune is these huge ideas that you need to sit and think about, criticism of government structures, religion, etc. Even the powers that Paul and Bene Gesserit hold are so difficult to explain. We already have Dune for dummies and it's called Star Wars

I enjoy the 1984 version and own the extended edition (makes it roughly 3 hours). I watch it once or twice a year. As for the remake, I'm always down for more Dune.

If this means another RTS in the Dune Universe, i'll support it. As buggy as it was, Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis was one of my favorite pc games growing up and still damn proud I beat that fucking nightmare of a game with House Ordos.

No one (aside from OP) has mentioned that Villeneuve is tabbed to direct. That's a huge plus

Did you ever play the mods? I got a mega games disc from hong kong which had ultimate dune 2 with like 3 other new houses and units and missions and stuff.
    Shit was cash money.

No and now I wish I did. Sure you're not thinking of Dune 2k, which was a remake? Dune 2 that I played was back in the dos days. I used to get bored and fuck around with X-Tree Gold and hex edit starting units afterwards and see if can break the game.

Yeah I'm 100% sure, The Megagames CDs were popular compilations that I got from a friends father who travelled to hong kong, and he kept bringing back new stuff.
There was some super wacky stuff on there.

One time he brought back a doom CD that that over 600 mods for doom, some of which have probably been lost forever, including stuff like alien doom, porn doom, etc.
Tons and tons of classic DOS games as well, including some badly translated ports of chinese arcade games.

Got me into the original Xcom, Dune, etc.

Yeah it was or super early internet days - there was no way to get hold of that shit outside of the compilation disc scene, or if you had access to a university internet connection.
He gave me some of those discs as a kid and it was ridiculous, it was like getting I dunno, 1/4 of the ps2 catalogue that you didn't even know existed just thrown into your lap.

There was a western shareware compilation called Megagames but the HK pirate scene called their discs the same stuff - he'd go into a random pc shop over there pick up a few discs for like $10 or whatever, and bring them back.

It was super early on in CDs as well - you still had to put your CDs in those jewel box things before putting them in your CD drive.

I guess the movie is only gonna cover the first half of the first book. Which means if it bombs like Blade Runner 2049 then no second movie.

I wonder if it ends when Paul and Jessica flee to the desert or a bit further in? Not sure where a good stop would be.

I think it would have to be after that. Would be weird to end the movie right as the first real conflict hits
