    Visa to Brazil advice?

Does anyone know of a good/trustable private company or other way to get a tourist visa to Brazil?

I'm looking at traveling there in 6 months and I live in Washington (Near Portland, OR), with the nearest consulate in San Fransisco. I'm going to Southern California next month but when I looked on the consulate website it says you have to be from SoCal to get the visa in Los Angeles. I don't really want to have to fly to SF to get the visa :/

From what I've read you have to have an itinerary for your flight and stay but that's pretty much the extent of it. I already have my passport.

    Thanks

Check to see if you the consulate in SF will do visas by mail. While I don't have experience with Brazil specifically, I had to get a student visa for my time in Korea. The consulate allowed me to send the paper work and my passport via USPS to them (I can not stress enough the importance of getting the insurance on your package if you mail your passport), and they mailed back my passport + visa.

yeah call em up and do it asap. visa business can be really annoying and brazilian visas take some extended time to complete.

where are you visiting in brazil, btw?

I would say get this started now because the government has a tendency to take their time. When we go on R&R from deployment we usually start doing this two months before the intended traveling date.

For country clearance we would use https://ecc.state.gov/security/EccLogin.aspx but I don't know if it works for the general public.

Gonna be staying in Sao Paulo but going to be going to Iguazu Falls, Rio, and probably some resort near Sao Paulo.

My girlfriend lives in Sao Paulo so I get stay basically for free. She's been here once for 3 months this winter and is coming again in 9 days so maybe if I have her call the consulate in LA and talk to them in Portuguese she can work something out (about getting it out of my jurisdiction). Either way it looks like there are some visa companies that look trust able ie http://www.abriggs.com/

Haven't been to Sao Paulo since I was really young, but I'm sure this also applies to there just as much as it does to Rio:

Don't look like a tourist. Dress down a bit, and try to blend in with everyone. Don't have a visible camera on you, or any kind of visible technology, or anything that might look expensive. You will get mugged. Especially if you look like a tourist. If you're a big tough guy, this may not be as much of an issue.

Don't let that scare you, though. It's a really pretty place, and most of the people are nice. Crime is pretty high, but they've been cracking down on that lately since the world cup and olympics are coming to Brasil in a few years.

Sorry I can't help with the visa issue.

edit: If you ever move to Rio, or know people who are looking for an apartment in Rio, shoot me a pm. My mom's doing real estate down there, can hook you up!

hah, funny cause i visited pretty much the same places. i went to salvador as well, though it's not a place i want to go back to.

    also, RE: julian

my first night in brazil (SP specifically) my friend who lived there drove me around. we got there at night and he basically ran all the reds, telling me that you will get carjacked if you stick around in one place. at first i was like "wtf ok"

as we were driving under a bridge i glance over to another street and i see one guy in a truck talking to 3 other guys on a sidewalk. then all of a sudden one of them opened the door and pulled the guy out of the car.

then i was REALLY WTF I WANT TO GO HOME

Yeah. Keep your shit locked, windows closed, and ignore the beggars. Most of them are harmless, though.

From what my GF says it's not too bad where she lives. She lives in a pretty nice area (though I know shit can happen anywhere) and says that she doesn't have any problems taking the bus. I do hear that traffic in SP is awful though.

Not to worried about sticking out, I was just told to not talk too much and I'm 6'5" so I doubt I'll get mugged, but I'll definitely not bring anything too expensive with me when I'm out in the city.

when i was walking through the mall my buddy basically criticized everything i wore as me sticking out. he said everything from my shorts to my glasses were "american" so it was pretty obvious i was "rich". the only thing that passed were my air jordan sandals, which he said nobody would recognize lol.

and yeah, traffic is bad but it's the smog that gets to you. thick and disgusting, it's like breathing the air when there's a huge fire nearby.

That's a Sao Paulo thing. Like I said before, last time I went there I was maybe 5? All I remember was all of the newspaper littering the streets, and the smog. lol. I'm sure it's not everywhere, especially in nicer neighborhoods.

Don't think your height will keep you from getting mugged.

Anyway, people are always talking about how crime rates are high bla bla etc. Unless you're somehow involved with drugs, chances of getting into trouble are very small; or if you're inside the wrong bus at the wrong time. Other than that, it's pretty much smooth sailing.
