Post Your Favorite Musicians' Other Best Songs -- Convert the Unenlightened!

"Damn, I didn't think I liked that band.. this song is actually good"

I've looked at some of the Best Of's for bands I already like and I'm like whaaaat.. I've often wished that Best Of's were made by the bands themselves or by fans, not the record label

Any Smashing Pumpkins fan will know what I'm talking about when you imagine someone who knows only the Pumpkins' radio singles, trying to get an idea of their sound, and not knowing songs like Mayonaise, Soothe, Bodies, Soma, In the Arms of Sleep, or the entire box set companion to the double album barring Pastichio Medley

I honestly wouldn't be a fan if I only knew Zero, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Tonight Tonight (oddly enough you need to hear the acoustic to appreciate this song once again after the over-exposure on the radio/music videos) and Rocket (wtf? I don't even like that song)

anyway, given the examples listed, I'll do a little glimpse into a side of the Pumpkins you may not have known, might be nice to keep it to 3-5 songs and have one post per list

vids and comments in the post to follow, enjoy

    Smashing Pumpkins

bought the b-side collection after hearing just this one song, no regrets:

quite possibly their best song in all honesty:

underdog of a song, can I has a sad:

this song is pretty intense, didn't like it at first when I listened to all the pretty songs on Mellon Collie but this was the first loud non-single I liked after a few listens:

didn't realize this was an actual single, finally they got something right (not to sound like a hipster and say something as stupid as all singles are bad by default, but didn't even know they made a video for this) this song is a great upbeat contrast to the general maudlin, angst, and rage filled sad albums:

also protip: don't bother with Zwan or anything post 2001. James Iha's side project is excellent but arguably sickeningly romantic, not for everyone, but a gem for some

Cherub Rock and Disarm are the Pumpkins best songs by far.

personally never got into cherub rock either, I equate it with rocket in my mind, although there's probably a lyric in cherub rock worth re-looking at

one thing that wasn't ideal for me when I was first getting int the pumpkins (I was drawn to their pretty, sad songs) was the quiet quiet quiet then LOUD when I really could have lived without the LOUD

I'm more of a beat junkie so I don't listen to lyrics most of the time. In my head the voice is just another instrument and inorder for the song to qualify as good music the singer has to flow with the other members playing instruments. Of course every now and then I'll listen to lyrics and discover meanings or finally know what that song was about.

There's still a lot of stuff I've been listening to for the past 20+ years I don't even know. Most music tho is mainly about love so I get the gist. If not love, it's hate, money, drugs etc. Here are some of my favorites from the already mentioned bands:

This one isn't that great but it has special meaning to me so it's up there.

As stated Return of Saturn is a great album (my fav) If Gavin Rossdale ever does screw up, maybe we'll get the old Gwen back (good for us, sucks for her).

edit* lulz maybe I should'n't have posted that version of New...

you guys need to know about some Hot Chip, one of the lesser exposed established bands (same with Interpol), they are truly fantastic

protip: they are not the 'boy band' lol

"I can play X-Box with my brothers"

check out youtube for their bigger funkier songs, but this guy's voice is strangely haunting

Most people that know of The Cult just know of She Sells Sanctuary because of Guitar Hero. What they don't know is that The Cult has dozens great songs.

These guys IMO are currently the best band right now. You'll need to take a liking tho towards that "bluesy sound" for most of their earlier stuff.

    Spoiler: show

before clicking the spoiler and reading 'best band' I knew it was either going to be something I completely disagreed with or Black Keys or Mumford and Sons

not that I have strong opinions but both have that kind of 'yeah I could see that' qualification to them, even though I myself prefer other (older bands)

someone told me the top rock album of last year reached no higher than 42? or something. Seems like there's not a lot of good new rock bands

    hmm

edit: totally forgot: best new band by far is Twin Shadow, discovered them in 2010, seen them twice since. Literally every one of their songs is good. I never skip a song on the album out of dislike

    Spoiler: show

all time: Pumpkins, moreso for sentimentality sake

current: eh that's difficult because I've been listening to DJ Diplo, Lykke Li, Kina Grannis (girl & a guitar), Cat Power, Major Lazer (see Diplo), and a bunch of random stuff like Purity Ring etc

I do have my top 10 bands/acts that I buy everything of:
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Tool, A Perfect Circle
    Nine Inch Nails
    Flaming Lips
    Interpol
    Bjork
    Aphex Twin
    Chemical Brothers
    Mogwai
    Hot Chip

and I do recommend Yo La Tengo's entire album called And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out

strongest album of all time (despite me liking individual songs by the same artist and others better) in my opinion is and always will be Tool's Ænima

I put this against any Beatles album, any Radiohead album, and Pink Floyd Album and any other band that tries to make a semblance of a good record, not just pump out their latest 12 songs they wrote on tour
