Why do religions of the book seem to hate women so much?

Two examples that inspired me to ask this somewhat rhetorical question:

The Ikea catalog distributed in Saudi Arabia is the same as in other countries except for what it's missing — women.

The Swedish publication Metro has posted a comparison of the Saudi Arabian mailer and the Swedish version, showing that women present in the latter were missing from the former.

n one instance, a pajama-clad woman — shown standing at a bathroom sink along with a man, young boy and toddler nearby — was erased from the catalog distributed in the Arab nation, leaving just the three other people in the picture.

A Hasidic newspaper said it was following Jewish modesty laws when it printed a Situation Room photo that was doctored to remove Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a second female White House staffer.

The Brooklyn-based Der Zeitung sparked Internet outcry after it published the now iconic photo Friday showing only men present to monitor the daring 40-minute Navy SEALs raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.

National Security team member Audrey Tomason was also scrubbed from the image.

The ultra-Orthodox Der Zeitung released a statement Monday apologizing if the edited image "was seen as offensive," but said it was following Jewish modesty laws when it made the decision to delete Clinton and Tomason from historical record.

Maybe someone might drop some historical facts on why religions of the book (Torah, Bible, Koran) seem to have such an overriding obsession with controlling women, to such extants as to even want to erase them from public viewing.

Firas is going to want your head. "Religions of the book" is how muslims call christianity and judaism; IIRC they very much distaste being included in that category.

As for your question, well, as you said, it's rhetorical.

They were written by man at a time where women had no rights.

Those were some very hateful men.

In Christianity, the Catholic Church rejects the similar expression "religion of the book" as a description of the Christian faith, preferring the term "religion of the Word of God."[4] Nevertheless, other denominations, such as the Baptists, Methodists, Seventh-day Adventist Church[5][6] as well as Puritans and Shakers, have embraced the term "People of the Book."[7][8]
Catholic church apparently doesn't like it either.

    You mispelled "pedoprophet".

Aiden: while it's true that much of the ancient world was patriarchal, the pagan world was less misogynistic than the world became after the abrahamic religions took hold.

Granted, i suppose i should say that to me the religious explanation for misogyny: that the books were written in a time where misogyny was more acceptable, and that hard core right-wingers, reading these outdated scriptures, take them to be revealed truths, and thus accept the misogyny that comes along with it. That explanation isn't completely satisfactory to me. I believe here the same thing i believe about homophobia: that religious scripture is just used to give words to an already existent hatred towards either women or lgbt people.

In the context of this thread, i'd like to know if the abrahamic religions in particular, are more misogynist than the rest of the religions in the world.

Buddhism has some pretty blatantly misogynistic doctrines.

If you give women power then you have to share the power. Keep women down and powerless there is more power for you to use.

Women can never reach Nirvana, unequal rules for nuns, and to attain Buddahood they have to journey through Sansara until they accrue sufficient merit to be born a man. There's a whole bunch of other shit too but that college class was a long ass time ago.

Women aren't people, simple. You wouldn't feel bad if the Bible was rude to rocks, would you?

A lot of people seem to. It's easy to admire if you know nothing about it.

I know a lot about it actually I've just never heard that before. All religions have messed up rules like this though. That's why I don't follow any of them.

While Greek mythology has its fair share of misogyny, Athena and Hera have been depicted as powerful women for their time.
