Any genetics people here (electrophoresis + 500bp ruler)

1) Your labeled image in digital format. Label the wells & 500bp ruler sizes (see to the right).

Basically it has a picture of the bp ruler to the right, but the entire ruler is smaller than the images she put up for our "digital image"

Basically, I'm supposed to make measurements, but I have no kind of scale to work with whatsoever, because this ruler obviously isn't scaled to the size of the image we're supposed to be labeling. This is due in the drop box tonight and the teacher is out of town, so can't even email her about the thing.

That being said, I'm 100% lost and this is pretty much the first step, so I can't even do the rest of the assignment until this is taken care of.

Anyone who has had genetics before know how I would go about measuring this image?

You have two samples on your gel and it looks like the left one may be the ruler.It isn't picture perfect, but first gels generally aren't especially if you poured it yourself.

Looks like you may have contaminated the first well, which makes it hard to read.

Just mark 500bp as your first band (starting at the bottom) on the left well and work your way up.

Yeah, I was on my phone before, but now I'd say 490 and 900 for your sample bands (second well). You can see that you added a little too much sample to the second well because there's contamination in the first and third wells, but based on the contamination level of the third well it's probably safe to say that the strong bands on the left are actually your ruler (AKA ladder, iirc).

Remember the sizes on the ladder will be different distances apart depending on how long you run the gel. In your gel it looks like you didn't have enough of the ladder (or not enough exposure when you took the picture) to see all of the bands clearly.
But the 500, 1000, and 1500 bands (the first three) are pretty obvious, and since the other fragments are all that size or smaller you should be able to go from there

The marker is actually the one in the middle with the control on the left and our sample on the right. That'd make the middle row bottom band 500?

You can say that if you want, but it looks like you contaminated the wells with your MW ladder and don't actually have anything in your sample. But sure, call them 500 and 1000 then.
