Looking at new computer speakers

Well after about 12 years, countless knockdowns off my desk, and two moves my awesome Creative Labs 2.1 speaker set is starting to die. Looking at replacing them with another 2.1 set (no room really for a full surround sound nor do I really need that) that A: Sounds great and B: will hopefully last at least half as long as my old Creative Set. I will most likely be buying them after christmas so if there is something on the horizon coming out I should watch for, please let me know. Price range wise I really don't want to go above 200.

Also no headphones. I can't stand wearing headphones at my desk outside of Ventrillo/Mumble use when I'm gaming.

So, this might not be what you want, but seeing as how you are not getting any other advice...

I currently use some Pioneer SP-BS21-LR speakers. To do this, you just simply have to buy a cheap little amp, RCA cable, and some wire. The only problem with this set up is that the speakers are gigantic. However, the sound quality is better than any speaker set up you're going to get for $100 for a computer. Plus, you have the luxury of controlling the bass and treble via amp.

Pros: Amazing sound quality and a sick audio set up for <$100
Cons: Not specifically made for computers and huge, heavy speakers.

Second the general notion to use an amp and speakers rather than "computer speakers". T-amp is easier to fit versus an old receiver or something, but if you've got stuff like that around you could consider using it instead.

As another option, I'll chime in I guess. I bought these to replace my Logitech Z-680s (5.1 $600 speakers like 10 years ago):

for about $200. I like them. Only complaint is that the pack in (proprietary) cables are annoyingly short. Nice clear strong sound for a 2.1 in a small room.

Not to hijack thread, but what's my best option for a speaker system for my computer without a subwoofer. Moving into a condo soon, and don't want a woofer pissing off my neighbors below me. The method fairy-killer mentioned probably best, I assume?

While eventually i'd love to do a speaker/amp setup for my computer, being in an apartment with limited space that won't work out too well. I forgot about Klipsch and those speakers do look pretty sweet.

Slott, I know Bose has a 2.0 speaker setup for computers but they are probably marked up to hell.

on that klipsch set you can turn the subwoofer completely off if you want, it has a separate volume control for it next to the normal volume control. I rent out the mother-in-law apartment in my basement, and turn mine off when I know they are home or it's late (assuming I'm not just using headphones)

It's nice to also be able to turn it up to shake the whole house when you know you can though, hehe

Using regular audio gear is certainly the more flexible way to go. Most 2.0 setups marketed for computers are low end products, where you have a very wide range of bookshelf speakers to look at if pairing with an amp/etc. If you want to go cheap, you can go cheap. If you want to spend hundreds, there are plenty of options for that too.
