WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will attend a charity concert where PSY is scheduled to perform after reports that the South Korean rapper participated in anti-American protests several years ago.

A spokesman says Friday that the Obama family will attend the Dec. 21 Christmas in Washington concert, as is custom.

News reports cite two instances of the 34-year-old "Gangnam Style" rapper participating in concerts protesting the U.S. military presence in South Korea during the early stages of the war in Iraq. In a 2004 concert, PSY performs another act's song about killing "Yankees" who have been torturing Iraqi captives and their families "slowly and painfully."

PSY's inescapable hit went viral in the U.S. and holds the YouTube record for most watched video. A message left with his spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

got some butthurt on my facebook newsfeed about this, as well. i pointed out a few basic things (people can change a lot, presidents often invite popular artists to the white house despite sketchy pasts, etc) and got a "BUT MAO CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT" in response. This from an otherwise intelligent man. it stunned me.

although the guy played XI on the 360, so i guess he's not that intelligent.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

If you are referring to the kill americans song, he didn't write it. A metal band wrote it and he covered it. Not that is matters lol

Did youtube take that thing down where it was possible to view the map of how much access there was from all around the world? I remember seeing that before and burst out laughing.

Seriously, this is news? Musicians are entitled to their opinions. Besides, after Gangnam Style, it's hard to take that guy seriously anyway.

I seriously can't believe the RAtM thing wasn't a bigger deal.

If they ever found a picture of Obama standing in the same room as like, Zack de la Rocha or something Fox News would be shoving it in your face non-stop. "SEE! SEE! HE REALLY IS A SOCIALIST!" Maybe have some song spliced together with ominous latin chanting and make it a nightly segment.

Oh, but he doesn't like the lyrics, I guess that's ok then.

    non-issue

South Korean megastar singer Psy, famed for his runaway hit 'Gangnam Style', has apologised for anti-American performances a decade ago, ahead of a planned show before US President Barack Obama.

South Korean megastar singer Psy, famed for his runaway hit "Gangnam Style", has apologised for anti-American performances a decade ago, ahead of a planned show before US President Barack Obama.

In 2002 the singer smashed a model US tank at a protest over the American military presence in South Korea and the death of two South Korean teenagers who were struck by a US military vehicle.

Two years later he joined a performance of a song where he used controversial expletive-laden lyrics calling for the killing of "Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives".

"Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law, and fathers. Kill them all slowly and painfully," he rapped.

Psy performed the lyrics at a concert after a South Korean evangelist was beheaded by Islamist militants in Iraq during the US-led conflict, after Seoul rejected their demand to halt a troop deployment to the country.

"I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused by those words," the 34-year-old singer said in a statement.

He said the performance and lyrics were part of a "deeply emotional reaction" to the war in Iraq and the death of the two schoolgirls that was "part of the overall anti-war sentiment shared by others around the world".

"While I'm grateful for the freedom to express one's self, I've learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I'm deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted."

"I have been honoured to perform in front of American soldiers in recent months -- including an appearance on the Jay Leno show specifically for them -- and I hope they and all Americans can accept my apology."

News reports of the performances surfaced in the United States days before the pop sensation's planned performance at an annual "Christmas in Washington" concert on Sunday, which the Obama family is scheduled to attend.

Psy's "Gangnam Style" has become the most-watched video of all time on YouTube in just five months, garnering almost 906 million views.

The video has inspired thousands of online imitations of Psy's famous horse-ride dance, and flash mobs of tens of thousands in Paris, Rome and Milan.

so... said friend is asking for a specific example of controversial artists who've been invited to the white house by other presidents. I'm positive there've been plenty (particularly during/after Vietnam)- but my memory is awful, and I'm probably too young to remember them as artists anyway. Google and Wikipedia aren't giving me results from more vague search terms.

I've stalled by calling him old. Please help me provide examples!

There have been other artist that have been to the White House that weren't controversial that should have been by the current Fox news standards or whatever.

Bono, Springsteen, Bob Dylan have wrote songs about cop killers or murderers they believe were unjustly convicted but unlike Common there was no outcry about them. Could run with that.

Bono, Springsteen and Bob Dylan aren't controversial.

    They're white.
