Closed applications re-open after login

I've got an issue on one of my computers where I log off and all of the applications "close" but after I log back in they are still sitting on the task bar.

I've even tried closing the applications before actually logging out but they still seem to be open when I log back in.

This can be very annoying as I do files between computers and cannot modify them as they are still open on the other computer, the only way to get around this is to completely shut the computer down.

Has anyone had this happen before, if so what was the solve.

Any suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated.

Which applications are hanging? Are you sure you aren't clicking switch user instead of log off?

I would love to say its specific applications but its not, it is whatever I had open before logout, and yeas I'm sure I'm pressing logout.

That does sound like your switching user. Does this happen when you select reboot and login?

If you are on Mac it makes sense, otherwise its not if you are on PC so let us know

The computer having issues is running Windows XP SP3, its connected over ethernet.

That does sound like your switching user. Does this happen when you select reboot and login?

That's the problem, I'm not switching user, when I log out none of the users at the welcome screen show as "Logged in" and when I log in to another administrator account only one user shows as active/logged in and that is the one I'm logged in under. Rebooting does fix the issue temporarily until I hit log out again and then it happens again.

Although you've mentioned that you're sure you aren't switching users, if you don't need the quick user switching functionality, I recommend shutting it off, and seeing where that gets you.

Even if you do use it, try deactivating it and playing with your computer for a while, and see if it fixes the issue.
