    Any good MP3 players out there?

    Hey all,

    I'm looking to find a high-capacity mp3 player that sounds good.

    What do I mean by good? Not an iAnything (for having roots as mp3 players, they are pretty horrible), no fiddling with a $5 app for 6 hours on an android to sound OK...

    I've stockpiled a couple ~'07 Meizu mp4 players that have a great virtual 3D/surround equilizer setting and they can also handle .flac. The problem is, they are only 4gb.

    The brand must have been pretty well-renowned because even 2gb models are still $55, used 4gb are still close to $100 after 5+years.

    I have tried a sansa clip and it sounds better than apple/android, but not great.

    Anyone know of a great brand/model with capacity?

    Have you not tried putting rockbox on an ipod? You can do some pretty good stuff with that. I know you said no iX but just want to make sure you've given that a shot.

    Sansa Clip+? Can hold 32GB microSDHC cards and natively plays Flac/Ogg/WMA/MP3, also supported by Rockbox iirc

    EDIT:: Derp, didn't read OP properly

    I use a sansa fuze with rockbox, and the closest thing i have to a complaint is it doesn't support sdxc, which might eventually be a problem for me. Stock firmware was garbage, but rockbox was easy to install and works great.

    If you think iPods, androids, and sansas all sound bad, my question is what headphones are you using? If you are having to use "virtual 3D/surround equilizer" to get the sound you like, I'm thinking you might be listening with some bad headphones. I use PowerAmp on android, rockbox on sansa clip, stock gen 6 iPod nano, and stock gen 7 iPod classic and have no problems getting great playback. My headphones are klipsch x-10, Shure SE325, Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros, and Beyerdynamic dt990 250 ohm. For the 990s I run through fiio EO9K/E17 desktop amp/dac. If you are listening with skullcandys or stock apple earbuds most things will sound bad no matter what.

    Or you may just prefer a different sound profile than other people. But any of the devices can be EQed to something you like.

    No doubt my earbuds aren't the best, but on one device they sound great, so isn't it an issue with the devices more than the headphones?

    Like I said about the android eqs, I don't want to spend 6 hours trying to make things sound good, assuming they can on the device ; ;

    Not necessarily. Some devices, like the iPod and some models of the Zune back in the day, used the same sound chips. Sansas are considered very versatile and reliable MP3 players by a lot of people, including myself. I've used them through their various model iterations throughout the years, and I listen with Koss PortaPros, which are considered to be the best inexpensive headphones by a lot of hardcore audio enthusiasts.
