Replace stereo speakers or get pc speakers?

I don't know much about sound systems, but I bought a home stereo when I was 15 or 16 (so 9-10 years old); sounded fucking awesome (speakers had built in sub woofers) and they just died on me after this long.

Discontinued model, etc. (and shit, I got them at Target for $120, looking it up online the last price I saw them going for was $250)

3-CD changer with play exchange, 45-preset FM/AM tuner, and dual-well cassette deck
    460 watts total power: 70 watts x 2 (left/right), 160 watts x 2 for separate powered 8-inch subwoofers
3 preset and 3 manual equalization settings and simulated surround sound (dance/club/hall/stadium)
Auxiliary stereo analog input lets you hook up an MP3 player, minidisc player, or VCR
Includes full-function remote control and all required speaker wires

The receiver itself is still in perfect working order.

Would I be better off trying to replace the speakers and using the receiver, or just getting a pair of computer speakers instead? (and if so any recommendations for computer speakers?)

Did you ever use the receiver for anything else? Do you ever see yourself doing so again?

In that case, I'd suggest ditching the receiver, as it's taking up space you don't use. We haven't even gotten into speaker tech yet, but really, why keep it around?

To cover some basics, you want to ensure that your speakers are powered. At its simplest level, this means they're the kind you have to plug in somewhere. Anything that doesn't require its own dedicated electrical current (whether through a conventional plug or, in the case of laptop speakers, something like USB) is going to be crappy and not amplified. Fortunately, practically the only computer speakers that are built this way are real bargain bin deals, like things you'll find at the Family Dollar store.

    My cheap recommendation: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-980-0...8695692&sr=8-1

I've been enterprising since I was a kid, I confess. Whenever I wanted something done, I usually had to figure out how to do it myself, and this included working on computers (because my mother received one as payment for work once, and if I didn't fix it, I wouldn't have one anymore), fixing sound systems and home audio (largely for the same reasons), making my own food, getting my own car fixed, and so on, so forth—I'm a versatile nerd. I'm also a versatile bastard; I knew that my parents would never discover that I skipped school if I erased any related messages on our answering machine, for example.

I could go on, but that's probably off-topic here.

I have brought Gains-B-Gone to where you live. Mission accomplished.

(I didn't actually notice that, but now that you mention it, I'm proud of myself.)
