iPhone 5S and 5C: news and rumors of Apple's latest smartphones

At an event on Tuesday, September 10th, Apple is rumored to unveil two new iPhones. One is an iterative update to the iPhone 5 — likely called the iPhone 5S — which is expected to include some camera improvements, internal upgrades, and a fingerprint scanner built right into the home button. Apple is also rumored to debut a brand new iPhone line that'll sell at a lower cost than the flagship. It's rumored to be called the iPhone 5C, and is expected to have nearly all of the same features as the iPhone 5 — including a 4-inch display and LTE — but be housed in a number of different brightly colored plastic shells instead of an aluminum case.

The event should also bring about a release date for iOS 7, the latest update to iOS and one of the biggest changes it's ever seen. The update completely overhauls the operating system's visual design into something more colorful and modern, while adding a number of much-requested features like quick-access controls as well.

The Apple TV may see an update too. Reports have been split on whether that'll include any new hardware, but a software update that adds new functionality to existing sets is a definite possibility. Up to 250 hours of standby. Schiller says it's better than the iPhone 5.

Camera

a new, five-element Apple-designed lens" with an F2.2 aperture.
The camera app sets white balance, exposure, creates a "dynamic local tone map," "autofocus matrix metering" with 15 zones ... all automatically.
When you take a photo, it actually takes multiple photos and picks the best.
The new flash has two LEDs. One is cool and white, the other is warm and amber.
Auto image stabilization - takes multiple photos, combines them for light levels, but picks the sharpest one.
Slo motion 120 fps @ 720p
28-megapixel panorama, the iPhone adjusts exposure level automatically as you pan.

Security

Touch ID - A new sensor: the Touch ID Sensor. It's 170 microns thin, senses 500 ppi, scans your sub-epidermal skin layers.
Fingerprint sensor on home button
You can also scan your fingerprint to do stuff in apps, like authenticate iTunes for buying apps.
It can handle multiple fingerprints too.
"All fingerprint is encrypted, and secured inside a secure enclave."
"It's never available to other software." It's never uploaded to Apple's servers or backed up to iCloud.

This new phone needs to sell in china, or Apple is in trouble. Apple losing a lot of group to pre-pay due to the high cost of the iphone.

Won't be upgrading to 5C, but maybe 5S in the future. Hoping it has the rumored finger print home button.

I have a laptop w/ a fingerprint reader and I really like it. Don't have to type my long password anymore on lock/login. On a phone it would be faster than using a pin.

Not sure how the fingerprint scanner is going to work out in real life, but I do like the idea over inputting the pass code over and over. Jeez. Technology is spoiling me!

I wonder how extensive Apple has put in damage tests on the actual phone. Something I always wish they (and any mobile phone makers really) would include in their presentations. Though I do see the reason why it can be a bad idea, marketing wise.

Does the speed/chip even matter at this point? It's rather fast enough already. Only significant application for it now is processing large photos or intensive apps, but the former I think is fast enough already, and I'm not aware of any app that really taxes the CPU.

I agree. The iPhone 5 is plenty fast already. I'm quite interested to see the improvements to the battery life, because right now I feel it's a bit lacking compared to some Android phones.

I suppose the improved camera is also a welcome addition (to compete with S4 Zoom, Nokia's 48mp monster) but then that probably mitigates the battery life's increase in the new/improved battery.
