FFVIII is more popular than FFIV? The more you know!
I'm 100% part of the 6% for IV :D
I voted in that too
I used to be a FF7 fanboy when I was a kid and only played FF7,8,9. Then I grew up and played other RPGs: Chrono Trigger, DQ1-9 Xenogears, Lufia, Star Ocean, FF1-6, Mana series, Phantasy Star, Lunar, etc. And then I realized FF7, while very, very good, is also VERY overrated. In terms of story/lore/depth/character development it's definitely a 10/10 but it's not a 45/10 like some fan boys believe. I'd even say Xenogears and Xenosaga is at or better than FF7 in terms of story.
I noticed after Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square, the quality of FF story lines was ruined. FF12 and 13 were pretty 'meh'. 13's story was one of the worst. It was like FF10-lite. Everyone was one dimensional, Snow, Lightning. All boring and forgettable. Each was a lamer, more simple version of previous FF characters.
Cecil vs. Kain....with the added bonus of an "I am your brother" badboy and a trip to the moon? How can you deny it?
VIII was awful to me. I liked IX, IV and V more.
Viii was corny. They're just kids. How do they defeat an omniscient sorcereress with whips and nanchaku? What makes these 16 year old kids more qualified than any of the older, more experienced and battle hardened SeeDs? At least in past ff games, main characters had some kind of power that made them believably powerful or they were blessed by the power of the crystals, or they were magically infused genetically engineered weapons. Anybody can use GFs in ff world, and you assume most of the humanoid bosses you fight had gfs since they use magic. Just always wondered why i had to play as some angsty 17 year olds when any of the Galbadian soldiers are likely more experienced and battle hardened than some emo virgin with girly hair a fundamentally, overcomplicated weapon.
And least cloud and co were like 24+ Ff9 cast was young but they were mages/summoners/genomes.
8 had sort of the same problem as 2: if you played the game straight, it was stupid and annoying and hard. If you cheese the game it's just stupid easy.
2: Walk outside first town, beat yourself nearly to death, walk back inside, rest up, repeat.
8: very first beach, draw 30 whatevers, junction them, one-shot everything for a majority of the game
I'm surprised 8 wasn't a Tanaka game as 2 was, which explains a lot about the latter really if you weren't aware of the fact. 8 does have an explainable storyline, as short as it'd end up being. tl;dr Squall got exactly what you'd expect of a 17-year-old taking on an omnipotent sorceress.
12 is underrated as a single-player 11 (same engine or something, it started as the prototype I think). Vaan is a shitheel, but the game is playable and quite enjoyable if you just ignore him. Every other character is palatable in some way, Vaan just blows too many goats as a character design to take seriously.
13 was a series of corridors more linear than a Call of Duty and the most repetitious battle music in history. Every fifteen fucking seconds: BAAAAAAAAAnaNAna BAAAAAAAAAAA na NAAAAAAA. It'd be fine if that was the boss music, since you might stick around to enjoy it, but it's the vanilla fucking battle music and the intro and hook are just waaaay too aggressive and overbearing for not having the option to turn it down or off!
The greater appeal of ffviii to me was less it's story than the overall presentation. The music, graphics and art direction were executed harmoniously. 7 might have been the series entry that leaped into 3D but 8 was the one that polished the style and execution that future Ffs would have. The gameplay was also good - easy to get into and also highly exploitable for anyone with the knowledge.
Wrt the story, prefer the R=U theory than squall's dead, because the latter requires you to believe that a fantasy story isn't incredulous, which is dumb
What i appreciated about 7, as an adult now, is the sheer grittiniess. People curse, people are gunned down and killed with swords or stamped on by mechs, the slums have graffiti, there's punks with mohawks that spit, there's a sex brothel in a town full of trannies(bro's gym is full of gay muscle jocks that wear panties in their free time), the usual final fantasy motif of a corrupt king/emperor(Paramecia/Geshal/Baron) is translated nicely into a modern setting as the Shinra Inc. even the 4 original elemental crystals from ff lore are represented to pay homage to the theme of FF(Huge Materia; ff prologue theme during credit roll).
To date, ff7 was he grittiest, dirtiest, rawest ff game in existance. Every other ff game after and before were more innocent, pg-13, toned down. Even npc were rarely ever killed infront of you in subsequent games, the only excetion were non human npcs like ff9 black mages, or the deaths were implied. In 7, you always saw Sephiroth slashing and cleaving through shinra soldiers or hooded men(the floors in the Shinra bldg and the boat were smeared with blood, you dont see that shit in any other ff game)
Even advent children and crisis core toned down the ff world and made it more J-rock/j-popish. The music of crisis core didnt capture the grit of midgar and made it look sterile and boring. Also the whole dbs-like aerial fighting they do in advent children killed it for me because indidnt imagine the ff7 cast having the ability to fly and jump 400 feet in the air, even cloud. You didnt see cloud vault to the top of the shinra bldg in ff7, you had to climb that shit. I dont get why they had to make cloud and sephiroth have some bullshit kingdom hearts flying aerial battle in advent children, totally ruined my internal image of the ff7 world and the relative strength of the characters. Also advent children/crisis core had no cursing or seedy/questionable things in the expanded universe and i feel like if they remade ff7, alot of those elements would be lost or reimagined to make it more family safe. I know i'm just ranting but if you play any other ff game, you don't see characters smoking, throwing grenades and mines, first ff game to have guns, getting drunk, cursing, gambling, visiting sex brothels, cross dressing, eating korean bbq, npcs gambling their life savings, blood and gore smeared on the floor, people getting gunned down and slashed up to pieces or crushed, npcs taking shits in bathrooms, thugs spitting. The culture inside the ff7 world was why it was my favorite. I couldnt care less about aeris or the gripping storyline, it was the gritty, raw, realness of the ff7 world that made me love it, though gameplay wise and story wise other games were far better.
kinda like 80s cartoons then?
that era of gaming is gone. Nowadays there are 2 distinct camps for games. "mature" and the politically correct kid friendly stuff... and as far as mainstream FFs go, they're mostly PC whitewashed. blame society i say, but it has a lot to do with the adolescent market that FF is targeted towards. You're never gonna get the western-style F-bombs that some of the games these day have, but FF has been trying to grow up - although what we really get is far from gritty. I'd say XIV is a distant second in terms of mature themes. people smoke, drink and enjoy whores there no? Kinda typical old-school western fantasy sort of things.
Type 0 might be a game changer in terms of gore... never played the jp version to know
FF7 may have been fairly adult in terms of its themes but its also very camp in those same aspects. The problem i see is if they ever remake VII in the visual style adopted by CoFFVII, how those scenes would pan out, because the new direction is far more serious and "cool". And I think it's only Wall Market with the gay gym, brothel, S&M dungeon, toilet humor, etc lol.. the rest of the stuff like guns and smoking wasn't revolutionary in the least.
Ff7 was great in that the sprites didnt look particularly japanese, cloud talked in a very slangy kinda way, barret used slurs like "get your spikey headed white ass over here". I can't imagine a ps4 remake with photorealstic and eastern looking characters(the ff7 cast in AC looked very asian-esque) while maintaining the edginess of the original.
Also i blame tetsuya nomura mostly.
His 90's art style:
Vs
His 2000's art style

Basically this sums up Tetsuya Nomura's shift:

I hate that the Squalls dead shit spread so far. The mental gymnastics that people are going through to rationalize that single plot hole is just sad. The end of disc 1 has always struck me as another example of Squares love of having huge spectacle FMVs during the Playsation era. It's just a plot hole Occam's Razer etc. Also yeah Nomura really is to blame for the vast amount shit that has been vomited on FF over the last 2 console generations.
who said anything about needing it to be photorealistic?
perhaps you've forgotten this
this was what a PS3 was capable of, and it lines up with the 3d visual style adopted in the entire Compilation.

despite the fact that first and last iteration of Cloud in the compilation is as far as 8 years apart, everything is visually consistent. the only significant difference is texture detail when you go from mobile to PSP to PS2 to FMV quality. FF7's future visual style had been decided upon almost a decade ago. also, KH is not canon.
I can't believe I never noticed this, but, as the graphic improves, his hair makes less and less sense.
That being said, I'd prefer XII over any other Final Fantasy (except for XI), but to me, VIII stands out as the best one of the PSX-era. God, Fisherman's Horizon was such an amazing track.
For me this is pretty much the oppisite. I got into VII more then VIII mainly because I felt the draw system was a step backwards. When IX came around I really enjoyed the direction of how the game's combat system went from there. Don't get me wrong I don't think VIII was bad but to me I think VII had more curb appeal.
