Nippon Ichi's New PS3 Title: The Witch and the Hundred Cavalrymen

Some early super unverified reports from Dengeki PlayStation have revealed a new Nippon Ichi game for PlayStation 3. Titled Majo to Hyakkihei (or, roughly translated to English, The Witch and the Hundred Cavalrymen), the game is said to be a dark fantasy RPG with a seamless open world, a high degree of freedom, and dungeon RPG elements.

This report does not come from our usual flying get sources (who are themselves quite shady), so we'd suggest waiting for confirmation.

That report from earlier about Nippon Ichi's new PlayStation 3 title The Witch and the Hundred Cavalrymen appears to be legit. New details have surfaced:
The game is a dark fantasy action RPG
The world is open and seamless -- there won't be transitions between town and field
The game will have a high degree of freedom -- the world is like a sandbox where you can do anything
The visuals are fully 3D. The perspective is from above.
There will be a packed main story with over 30 hours of play
There will be lots of sub quests
There's no game over. But, if you die, you lose your items
There's lots of blood, and the game's visual expression is dark. However, they won't be going too overboard with the grotesque.
You can choose to side with good or evil
Nippon Ichi is not using the experience it gained from making Disgaea and other titles. (Make sure you read that carefully!)

There's one confusing bit about the reports that are surfacing at present. It seems that rather than controlling the witch of the title, you're actually controlling the hundred cavalrymen. We're waiting to hear more about this area.

Majo to Hyakkihei is due for PS3 release in Spring 2012.

Other than that, the bulletpoint list sounds exactly like the kind of game I'd like to play.

I'd be all for grinding to laughably high levels and traversing item worlds in an action RPG though.....

Doesn't look great graphically so far, and the cut scene/story looks like it's told through cut in pictures as usual. Not much surprise there, but it is disappointing initially. I was hoping NIS got better, or could manage more animated cut scenes - but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Concept is still interesting though, so I hope the game play makes up for it.

I actually like that.

NIS games always have crappy graphics. But they make excellent games. If you don't like that, go back to your CoD.

I know that having played basically every NIS game to come out. Stick outta your ass please.

It's not a crime to want better graphics or cut scenes (the latter is mostly just curiosity at this point) from a company with solid games. Currently the graphics are stylish and good (which is what NIS does), just not great. Also small screens probably don't do it justice, but I comment on what I can see.

Apparently you play as one of the hundred cavalrymen. But the other 99 can be summoned for special attacks etc.

First up, some clarification about the characters. As we reported earlier, the main character is a witch named Metallica. You don't control her, though. You control a soldier named "Hyakkihei," a name that translates to Hundred Cavalryman or Soldiers. The Hyakkihei is actually one of 100 Hyakkihei soldiers. Metallica can only physically summon the one, though. The others are used for only brief periods -- see below for details.

They are going for a cell-shaded look, which always has less polish and detail. But it looks really good to me and it really feels like one of their movies which is the look they wanted to go for anyways
