    BG Auto: the Windshield edition

Hey, just looking for some general advice regarding my windshield. I'm at a glass place right now getting my windshield fixed, just a small chip that could spider out if I don't fix it, but I have a few small little Knicks in the glass too. Was curious if I should worry about this or if there's a cheap/mostly simple solution I can do myself.

Also, I live in Vancouver which has a long and very wet rain season. I was considering going out and trying to find one of those hydrophobic sprays or whatever and applying it to the windshield too. My wipers are okay but I thought this could help with visibility too. Anyone try it before? Should it even be applied to glass?

In my limited experience, there's not much they can do for scratches. My windshield got cut (literally, someone took an exact-o knife to it) over Christmas break and although it wasn't deep the only option was to replace the entire windshield. They can't buff it out because it will distort the windshield, and they can't fill it in because there's nothing to really fill. Shit blows.

I use that Rainex stuff on my side mirrors and it works surprisingly well. Never tried it on my actual windshield though.

i wonder if hydrophobic sprays work on snow/ice. should, right? be useful if they did. put that shit on my mirrors, never have to scrape my mirrors again. not that that works anyway.

i would imagine it wouldn't work well on the main windshield because there's too much abrasion. constant wind erosion, plus wipers.

Your insurance should cover the cost of windshield replacement, if it doesn't then you got the wrong insurance.

An exact-o knife to your windshield? Why would someone do that? Like, what purpose? That just sounds frustratingly annoying. The little chips in my windshield I don't think are anything to worry about. They're not cracked in any way and they're just little surface chunks that have been chipped off, maybe a couple millimeters in size at best. I'm just being OCD about fixing it all and making it smooth +_+

I can't say if it would work on snow or ice. I mean, if it isn't super cold and the point of contact between the snow and your window is moist than maybe? And that was my main concern with the windshield too, that it'd just eventually rub off and wouldn't be worth the effort in applying it anyway. Although, side windows/mirrors and the back window might be worth it.

There's nothing that needs to be replaced. Just 1 somewhat deep chip that was taken care of and some other little knicks that I was looking into seeing if I could fix myself from home.

Just worry about chips and cracks. It's a windshield, it's gunna get damaged. My brother owns a auto glass repair company.

Only if you have comprehensive coverage and even then, there's a deductible to pay. In my case the glass shop worked with me because my deductible is $500. I paid the glass place $200 cash and they paid my deductible. If I hadn't paid cash it would have been $280 I think, so they saved me $80.

Dunno. It was a perfectly straight cut across most of the driver side of the windshield, right about eye level. I'd never seen something like it before, none of my friends had ever seen anything like it, the glass people had never seen anything like it. Dunno why someone would do that but we have some real shithead children in my neighborhood so who knows. Glass guy said it definitely looked like a cut though.

Honestly if it hadn't been where it was I wouldn't have bothered replacing the windshield. But it was right in my line of sight and it was driving me nuts.

My mom's Rav4 had a heated windshield that cost $450 to replace before tax. That sucked big time.

    And she cracked it twice.

    Somewhat related.

My Ford's windshield caught a rock on the freeway. I ignored the tiny crack like a dumb ass, and it spread pretty far. Safelight quoted $400+. Wife gets in an accident and a GMC Sierra rolled on top of the windshield and front end, totalling the car. Cost of down payment for new car was $330. Cheaper to replace the entire car than the windshield. Problem solved itself lol.
