Dual booting Ubuntu and Win 8

Hey guys, so I'm trying to get Ubuntu on my laptop since I code mainly in C++ and would like to be able to just code in linux for simplicity. I'm having some troubles.

I followed all the steps in this guide ( http://itsfoss.com/install-ubuntu-14...ows-8-81-uefi/ ) so I have a partition for Ubuntu, a swap partition, and a home partition.

When I complete the Ubuntu installation it's prompts me to restart and I'm supposed to get the grub menu or a menu to select which OS I'd like to boot but that doesn't happen. It still boots directly into windows. When I hit ESC at start up to choose where I'd like to boot I can choose Linux, but when I hit enter on Linux it blinks out for about a second, gives me the same menu again, and then when I choose Linux again it just proceeds to boot into Windows.

I have UEFI disabled, and when I go into BIOS settings and disable the Windows boot loader and only enable the Linux boot loader I get sent to a screen that says "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

Inserting my USB with Ubuntu flashed on it does nothing.

I'm pretty much out of ideas. Any help?

Edit: Fuck me, think I figured out a work around. If you set the OS partition you're going to load from as EFI instead of Ext4 it seems to work. Still need to run some checks and make sure windows isn't fucked, but I finally booted into Ubuntu.

Yeah I got it, can delete this if necessary or keep it as a warning from history about being dumb around computers on the internet.
