Iwata reiterated the new membership service will be compatible with multiple devices and will form a “bridge between smart devices and dedicated game systems.”

These multiple devices will include existing 3DS and Wii U systems, as well as Nintendo’s dedicated game system NX and smart devices and PCs.

“While we will announce the details of this integrated membership service at a later date, I can share with you at a high level the idea is that the consumer can access multiple devices using one common ID,” Iwata said in his presentation. “We will offer advantages to consumers who use one ID across multiple devices.

“So far, the members input their Club Nintendo ID to use the services. With this new service, our members will be able to visit Nintendo’s website and log in with one ID, and they will receive various services including the ones based on their past purchases and gameplay records as well as services that will be an improved version of the current loyalty program.”

So it's exactly what they have now, only adding non-gaming devoted devices. I still don't get why we needed a whole new service for that, and not just an extension to what we got now.

Maybe the phrasing is nothing more than that, but does anyone else get the sense Nintendo might be trying to build a PSN/Live type of online network and this is step 1?

That's the impression I was getting, rather than the current disjointed NID system which kind of exists in a void outside of the 3DS and WiiU.

Hopefully Step 2 would be a web storefront to purchase 3DS/WiiU/Phone goods from and have them auto-download to their respective platforms the next time they connect to the servers.
