Protesters got maced and attacked by dogs when protesters got angry when the bulldozers showed up.

Just read about this. Apparently they found some sacred sites in that location and informed the courts the day before, only to have the pipeline company go right to those spots to dig them up on a holiday weekend. Pretty fucked up if true.
There have been other recent cases of the government stomping on sacred sovereign lands, and those also never get reported. Just like America doesn't like remembering it's history of slavery, they also don't like to be reminded of the genocide of native Americans
We own up to slavery and its tangential atrocities way more than the genocide of indigenous peoples, but it's still a fair point. I find most people are completely clueless/delusional with how appallingly we conquered the natives.
And how it is a current issue and continues to be one. The poverty rate on reservations is extremely high as is alcohol and drug abuse and crime. Not to mention the fact that the US government continues to play the whole "theres wiggle room" in the agreement that we made guaranteeing you certain things, you know except when it is inconvenient or costs money. The politics surrounding reservations and land use is incredibly complex and I don't fully understand it but it seems like there is some shady shit going on in this country.
Definitely.
Can we just ban white people yet?

After a judge denied the move to temporarily halt construction the federal government is moving in to temporarily halt construction.
It seems that someone is paying attention to all the protesting.
