    Wedding Registry Wish List

Now that my fiance and I have gotten most of the heavy lifting on wedding planning done (venue, caterer, bar, rehearsal dinner, honeymoon, etc. etc.), she has turned her attention to the smaller stuff...namely our wedding registry.

Not to ignore the fact that this is a great opportunity to call on the generosity of our family and friends in helping two lowly newlyweds set up their home, I got to thinking about some items that I have always wanted to purchase but never had the real opportunity to fully utilize them.

    Spoiler: show
We're both actually well established in careers and could purchase 90% of the stuff we're asking for no issue, but both our parents have been insistant on setting up a registry for items. Not grubbing for free stuff, I just can't say no to my mother.

With that in mind, we are going to purchase a home in slightly under a year from now and could now make full use of some items we both had in mind; but in not actively shopping for any of them before don't really know which brand or format may be better than another and I got to wondering if BG could help me out.

Soundbars: Is bigger really better? Is a 50 inch soundbar really 10 inches (and X dollars) better than a 40 inch soundbar? I'm inclined to go with Vizio or Samsung as a rule of thumb. Bells? Whistles? What side stuff to look for?

Home Wide WiFi: My friend recently installed this and swears by it; being able to control the lights in one room from another and ensuring that WiFi is accessible throughout their home even in the basement. We have an echo and placed a few echo dots on the registry as is, but is that the best or most efficient solution vs an integrated system?

Projectors: My brother in law has a media room set up with blacked out paint on the walls and a projector for movies and games. I've always thought this could be an awesome solution for space in a game-themed man cave where I would want to maximize space to display game collections and memorabilia. How big is too big? Would just shelling out for a 50+ inch HD TV work better for games/sports viewings?

Wildcard: Anything else that's good to ask for that eventual first time homebuyers may not immediately recognize as needing? We've already got some of the usual bedding/towels/home depot gift cards/etc up there.

As far as home automation, currently we are using IKEA's smart bulbs. They are cheap and they work well. They're LED so they last a long time and they've got adjustable brightness and warmth gradients. We also have a smart thermostat and it, the PC/roku/etc we use for the TV and the bulbs throughout the house are all rigged up to some home software, no intrusive Amazon/Google stuff necessary. You need to do some light programming to use it and run it off a dedicated server and it can combine with Echo/Google smart home hardware as well. I'm sorry I can't tell you more because my bf is the one who rigged it all up and I wouldn't know the first thing about maintaining it, all I can say is it works quite well. For example, the AC is pretty loud in our place so he set it to turn itself off while the TV is on. I can dim or turn off the lights in the bedroom from my phone without having to get out of bed and hit the switch. Some of it feels superfluous for a small place like ours, but it does feel very futuristic lol. I think the limit to what you can automate is only your imagination and what you can actually buy/build for the setup.

Anyway, if you have the programming and handyman skills necessary to take on such a DIY job, I think it's much more customizable than what just an Echo could do. This is more like homebrew though which is generally more customizable than what a corporate-made hardware/software combo will do for you.

not sure about weddings, but i know Target has this thing where if you don't get everything on your baby registry you get a huge percentage off, so my future sister-in-law put a bunch of TVs and other shit they wanna buy for themselves on there.

for smart home, i suggest wifi-enabled outlets wherever possible (maximum flexibility) and bulbs where not.

Furniture. Shelves, tables, dressers, end-tables, etc. When you get your home, you'll find you have plenty of knicknacks and shit, but nothing to put them on/in.
