Dwarf Fortress
Bay 12 Games: Dwarf Fortress
Anyone play? I've been playing a bit of nethack on nethack.alt.org lately and text mode games like that are surprisingly fun. Haven't DL'd dwarf fortress yet but a few people I know in an IRC channel play it quite a bit and some of the situations that arise while building your fortress are pretty hilarious and random.

MANITOBA IS NOT A REAL PLACE
I've dabbled. It's a very deep game, and I haven't had the time or motivation to learn it in more depth. It seems like it has the potential to be quite fun, but it has an incredible learning curve standing in the way of it. I'd suggest getting a tileset, though, because Dorf Fort looks like an incredible mess if it's only in ASCII.
That being said, I've played more than a few roguelikes before.

Yeah the depth of it is pretty incredible. Will Wright could not dream of a game this deep.

A friend of mine plays it a lot, and he always give me some of the best stories about what's going on, I think so far my favorite was of some low-ranking dorf who decided to go into battle carrying her baby and then proceeded to kill something like 8 goblins, alone, after throwing her baby at one or two of them, when the rest of his army (which was somewhat advanced/built up) basically just keeled over and died.
I really should play

Wise fwom yo gwave
This game is something I should have tried before I paid for minecraft. The min/maxing, the micromanagement, the design work of things as simple as wells, keeping dwarves safe during sieges, traps traps traps and goddamn elves.
I'm hooked and it only took me about 15 tries before I had a stable, efficient start.
Oh is that a cyclops? Fuck you I got silver warhammers
Waitaminute is that nigga my mayor?
Conduct meeting indeed.
But then I dug in 140 zlevels deep and found no bituminous coal. At 115 dwarves it would take too fuckin long to make enough metal gear from charcoal fuel to defend us through the 3 caverns I tripped along the way. Wood gathering was becoming increasingly dangerous between coatls and random goblin ambushers and I got frustrated. So I started over and found coal at the 6th zlevel so now my dwarves are bristling with iron/steel instead of mere copper.
Addicting!
Resources I used to learn shit:
Zemalf's Beginner's Guide
Homeboy takes his time and doesn't skip any important details. He also points out the best version of Dwarf Therapist to use.
Boatmurdered
Mandatory reading for anybody entering the world of Dwarf Fortress.
Sinister Glacier Embark
Covers much more advanced topics and is probably a good place to go if you're wondering how the more difficult parts of the game work.
