Guess I'll see if this works with existing saves, as I was playing its expansions this past week since I never actually finished them in the heyday. Also them taking a 20mb game and bloating it to half a gigabyte and forcing the update on everyone that had Q1 installed instead of using a new Steam ID entry.

[EDIT] Alright, they kept the original versions of the games as well and my saves were intact. Seems they also updated whatever commandline default they used to launch glquake, even though I was fine running it in software @ 640x480. Music is all here for core game and expansions. Curious if the netcode is the original (latency-based movement delay) or changed for this, since online bro-op sounds like a good time through the new content.

Couple things to note: Turn off v-sync, it introduces an atrocious amount of input lag even at 144hz (seems to be a problem with all KEX engine games), and turn off motion interpolation/turn on bobbing. Least they defaulted to no texture filtering.

Was thinking of buying it for Switch but apparently its free for those who own it on Steam and I've got all of Quake games in my library.

So far, it looks like a very solid remaster. Works flawlessly (as expected, hehe) on my business/work focused ultrabook w/ Intel graphics processor. It looks like PC is the superior way to play the game but nevertheless, gonna wishlist it on Switch for future discounts.

Next decision: realMyst Masterpiece Edition for Switch or Myst VR for PC.

This KEX engine annoying me in a couple slight ways after working away at the game the past week (currently working on the MachineGames expansions), those being Windows key is flat-out blocked while the game is running (even when it's alt-tabbed), and that the game revs up its CPU usage 3x when it's not the active window......for some reason. Also getting the odd pause once in awhile which is annoying, since the original engine had zero problem with asset loading or hiccups in general.

Keep in mind the new Myst release also plays in regular desktop too. I don't know if I'd ever want to play it on Switch or VR unless there happens to be fantastic note-taking tools included.

Yup, bought it for Mac/PC and runs quite beautifully without VR.

Ended up finishing the entirety of this new port, Quake 64 campaign included. The new episode "Dimension of the Machine" I consider worth a look. Rather than designing maps that look like they'd adhere to Quake 1 system specs like MachineGames previous episode "Dimension of the Past" (which was also alright), they go full hog with the scale, brush detail, and enemy counts.

10 maps (+1 secret) across 5 episodes which may not seem like much, but they're roughly three times the size of your usual Quake map. Also makes decent use of the distance fog option if you left that on.

And I ended up buying it for Switch to play on the go as well. Wonderful content, very good remaster and priced reasonably. This is exactly how remasters should be. Fact that they gave it away for free to those who own the original on PC didn’t hold me from buying it on Switch.

    Fingers crossed for Q2 remaster.
