2023 Blue Gartr Game of the Year Discussion Thread: Single Player Layoff Edition

It's late, but its back for the eighth year in a row! The mods/admins will have their say in their blog post, but this is the time for us as a community to shit on each other's GOTY choices!

I tried to include the major GOTY contenders from around the interwebs along with a few surprises!

Myself, I had trouble choosing a GOTY this year. As much as I enjoyed games like FF16, Octopath, and Zelda. The thing that stuck with me the most was the Xenoblade 3 DLC.

Gotta second Baldur's Gate 3, hard to imagine anything else checking so many boxes of perfection.

I don't know why, but BG3 didn't really grab me. I may give it a second shot later. FF16, SF6, Lies of P were all better for me.

Really though BG3 gets my vote however this year was packed with banger after banger and I haven't had a year where choosing what to play at any given time was this difficult in a very long time

heard chef. still haven't finished TotK/Starfield or started Alan Wake 2, barely into Act 2 of Rogue Trader. Octopath Traveler II prolly deserves a play as well as do the ballin remakes of RE4 and Dead Space.

Only thing I own from that list is Starfield, and only because it came with my CPU. I had fun with it, but it's not GOTY material in its current state. Maybe one day it'll be there if Bethesda has the time/devs to figure out how to actually flesh out that game's foundation in some meaningful manner to restore some faith in the company, but they're probably all hands on deck with ES6 at this point while keeping a small crew on Starfield to finish off its season pass/minor QOL updates.

Best thing I probably played this year was Titanfall 2, and that came out in 2016.

Starfield is getting QoL and minor content every six weeks.

    BG-EZ.

Seriously though all around amazing year for games. So many choices where I'm like "it's not my #1 but it's an awesome game."

I could have bought an 11 pull and have 1000 gems left over, but all I got was this silly title.

I'm both surprised and not that Phantom Liberty is not listed on there because it's DLC.

    Easy Layup for BG3 tho.

Phantom Liberty absolutely one of the best gaming experiences of the year and better than the vast majority in contention

Sea of Stars was definitely fun and heartfelt but I wouldn't put it in GOTY territory.

If I had to specify GOTY for AAA and Indie separately it’d be BG3 and Sea of Stars for sure. Alan Wake 2 was a long time coming and the game itself has me hype for its DLC, and Remedies universe itself has me Hype for Control 2 eventually, but as a standalone game BG3 was just better and has way more replay value.

Absolutely 0 interest in games like Baldur's Gate 3, but totally understand why so many people liked it.

Tears of the Kingdom is easy GOTY for me though, nothing else was even close. Even with the original map being there, it still felt like a very different world, all the new additions to the game were fantastic, and Ultra Hand was just so fun to play around with.

BG3 was the classic "oh this seems great but I cannot invest into something so deep at this time" for me. I will come back to it someday when I have the proper amount of energy to devote to a game like that.
