they're recognized as a religion because

a) They get tax exempt status

b) They got CA to write a law into legislature that states a religious institution can not be investigated by the state. [yes. It's a law that they backed]

c) "interfering with a religious organization" is a misdemeanor in CA, It's the law that they pinned on the gentleman in the story, saying that it's illegal to picket them because of interfering with them.
