    Monkey Head Transplant

I wanted to know people's opinions on something like this. Semi graphic footage. Video is of an archived film showing an experiment to transplant one monkey's head onto another moneky's body. If something like this doesn't sit well with you I'd suggest not watching it.

Let me guess? The experiment failled?

Havent watched the video, and I'm not really interested to see that, but what was the point of the experiment? I don't really care about animal cruelty when we are going to eat them, and when they arent endangered, but doing stull like that is beyond retarded.

How did it not fail>_> I cant imagine a head transplant not failling unless I'm missing something.

it was a success I guess since the monkey was conscious...

although I would say it was beyond pointless since you can't re-attach the spine...

I don't think there is any reason why it theoretically wouldn't work. However, like Sadler pointed out, reconnecting a severed spinal cord is currently beyond realm of modern medicine. The attached head would be a quadrapalegic.

in that case its more like a full organ transplant if someones body is completely ruined.

thats pretty fucked up... the monkey was actually responding to stimulus after it was switched bodies

considering that was done in the 70's would be scary to see what they could do with modern medicine

Pretty sure I've read studies saying mice injected with stem-cells had their severed spines completely mended, or something about that anyway.

My brother is a quadraplegic from a car accident, so I try to keep up on current stem cell research.

There has been some advances in the field of regenerating the spinal cord of mice, but nothing that has "completely mended" the spinal cord.

Also a big fuck you to GWB for impairing stem cell research.

might want to research a little harder on this topic. to date there have zero advances in embryonic stem cell research (the stuff bush is against), the guy that said he made a break through with them ended up admitting he made up his "findings" to get more grant money before leaving for Korea with some other mad scientists.

however there have been many advances in adult stem cell research as of late, but they lack the funding (due to all the money going to embryonic research) to really help anyone.

what it really comes down to is money. it costs a hell of alot more $$$ to play around with embryonic sells than adult ones, therefor scientists can request tens of millions of $ in grants to research it. scientists have to make a living somehow i guess.

btw i'm not trying to come off as too hash toward you Wildman, i'm sorry about your brother. my girl friend has systemic lupus (somthing that might be able to be cured through adult stem cells) so i feel i can relate to you in a small way.

Maybe if Bush would stop spending so much on the Iraq "war" we could do some stunning advancements in our technology.

The reason why they do it on Embryotic stem cells is because ESC can transform into ANY type of cell inside the human body, while other types of human stem cells are limited to only about half this number.

The reason why there havent been such huge advances in ESC is because of government intervention restricting how its used and cutting funding. Honestly I think that they should be able to use Embryo's because in the majority of cases right now they are just put into medical waste facilities and incinerated. Why not use something thats that is destined to be destroyed in hopes of fixing a life. I understand you can argue its a human life, but its already dead and it is going to be destroyed.
