A Little Odin Drama

Hi guys, by now, many of you know that the character I've been playing since the NA release has been hacked.

This happened about a month and a half ago when I woke up one morning and found myself locked out of my account. It all happened due to an exploit Taj found that would allow people to reversely generate account ID via password. Numerous accounts have been hi-jacked since the method came to light, and mine was unfortunately one of them.

I called the SE service desk numerous times after I lost account, and was informed that there was nothing I could do to get it back. That was when I lost my hope and decided to leave FFXI.

The moment I found that I lost my account forever filled me with anger. It wasn't because I had to leave the game, it was because I had to leave my friends. I've been playing since the NA release, and like many people, I've made very close friends in the years. I've "quit" a few times in the past, but always ended up coming back. This was because I always missed my buddies, and that I always had my character. One thing I would never do is to sell my character. I've done pretty much everything there is to do in the game, from garrison to salvage; and I've accomplished quite a few things that I'm proud of. However, it was always my thought that when I leave, Aace leaves as well. When you've played the game for this long, the character becomes your alter ego. I want my friends to think of ME when they think of Aace, not "the first owner of Aace". That was probably the part that pissed me off the most, the fact that some jackass is playing my character. He'd be in a party and someone would be thinking "this Aace guy needs to know his fucking refresh cycle".

You might be wondering why I'm writing this almost 2 months after it happened. Well, a few things have come to light since then.

I pretty much have walked away from FFXI until I stumbled upon something that would be able to shed some light on the situation.

In order to understand what is happening, you must know the background of the story.

I started doing salvage when it first came out, pretty much daily with the JP. As many of you know, I speak a few different languages. As time went by, I started invited friends to join me on runs, and before I knew it, we started to form our very own Salvage LS. We were rather successful, and despite the fact that I'm rather ruthless as a leader (people will tell you I go into panic mode when we are on events), we all had a good time. Now, the members in question here are Swishahouse (Resurrection), Jkrieger and Ashruem. The former I met when the LS started, and the latter I've known for a long time. As many LS leaders would attest, there are always some type of drama going on. The week before my account was hi jacked, Swishahouse left the LS. We had a dispute over loot and he chose to leave the LS. I have no tolerance for dispute during runs, but I'm quite laid back when we're not on a run. So after our little argument, he told me he would leave. I never asked him to leave, nor did I ask him to stay, it was all his choosing. For me, the feeling was mutual, he didn't agree with the way loot was distributed, he decided to leave. No ill feelings. But that was apparently wishful thinking.

Not a hour after he left, someone from Ressurrection sent me a tell asking me about what has happened. Before I knew it, a member from my LS told me that Hex, the leader of Resurrection was inquiring about this matter as well. Little did I know at the time, what was a small event turned into something much bigger. For those of you who don't know, Ressurrection is probably one of the biggest LS's on Odin. Its reputation precedes it. There are many threads on this board that deals with it and its members, so I'll leave it to you to find out.

I soon put this event behind me, and a week later, my account was gone. I personally would have never connected these events, since I would never imagine ANYONE I know, no matter who they are, would be capable of account hacking. In my opinion, account hacking is pretty much the worst one can do in this game, and I didn't think anyone remotely reputable would do it, nor did I think I had ired anyone enough to make myself a target.

So, almost 2 month after Aace was hacked, just when I gave up hope, someone familiar logs onto MSN. The name of the account was the name of a real life friend of mine, so I opened the chat box ready to send a message. It wasn't who I thought it was be, but lo and behold, it was Swishahouse, who I haven't talked to on MSN for a LONG time. Just before I closed the chat box, I noticed something interesting in the background, it was an FFXI SS:

Let's highlight a few things in the SS that would clue us in on what's going on.

First, if you look at the SS, you will see Swishahouse, Aramaki, Lilia, Jkrieger, and Ashruem. From the SS, you can see they are in Bhaflau Remnant and a NM popped (congratulations, mother fuckers). It was clear on first glance this wasn't a SS that I myself took. Of these people, only Swishahouse, Ashruem, and Jkrieger were in my salvage LS, I do not know Aramaki, and I haven't talked to Lilia in at least a year. So it is quite evident that the SS was not taken by me, and it was taken after I lost control of Aace

Here's a few things that I can deduce from the SS. The person who took the SS was the one who stole my account, since the filter showed his damage. This was what first clued me in on who took my account. The person who did it did not server switch, as I imagined he would. Instead, he continued DOING SALVAGE with Swishahouse, who left the LS before I got jacked, 2 old members, and a few new ones. I know for a fact that at the very least, Ashruem and Swishahouse knew my account was stolen. The fact that the thief stayed on Odin, and continued playing with two people I know, suggests that the two people are probably both in on it. From the interaction in /l, it's pretty clear that the guy was not some random dude who just got the account and doesn't know what's going on. It's

So the only mystery left is, who were in on it, and why the hell would Swishahouse set the SS as his background on MSN. To taunt me? To spite me? I don't know. Or did he set the SS on MSN to give show his friends he has my character and to have a cheap laugh about it.

I would never know. What I do know is, Ashruem, I thought you were my friend, I guess I was wrong. Swishahouse, I'm sure you are proud of what you did with your 1337 hax skill. I'm not exactly sure why you feel I wronged you so much that you have to pay me back by doing this, but apparently that's how it turned out. I harbored no ill feeling towards you before this occurred, and even now, I'm simply confused

I'm writing this to provide some closure, and to warn everyone on Odin of these questionable characters.

So long, my friends, these 4 years have been a hell of a ride. I'll try to remember only the fond memories and leave on a high note.

Regardless, it still doesn't explain why the fuck you guys were in salvage together with someone who clearly has stolen my account. What I don't understand is, why do you set that shit as your background if you don't want ppl to know about it.

I'm sure you accidently set one of the other s/s as your backround while trying to send it to me and therefore you think its my backround.

If you would have taken the time to think instead of just pointing fingers you would have realized this. If I would have stole your account, I would have gladly told you I did.

And he is right, MSN backgrounds are normally set by you, not the other person. It's commonly done on accident with MSN by dragging a file to send it, and "dropping" it too early, and it ends up getting set as the background. It's another one of those moments of M$.

There's also the fact that the chatlog in both the OP and the ones two posts up use the same custom font colors: light blue for effects of special actions, green for cures, I think the damage you take might be a little purpler than normal as well. Might not be my place to say this, but it kinda looks to me like someone is owed an apology.

And he is right, MSN backgrounds are normally set by you, not the other person. It's commonly done on accident with MSN by dragging a file to send it, and "dropping" it too early, and it ends up getting set as the background. It's another one of those moments of M$.

The way this works is if you drag the picture over the big chat log area, it will get set as the background for the chat window, which I'm guessing is what the OP did. If you drag the picture into the smaller text input box at the bottom though, it'll attempt to send the file as normal.
