Newbie Guide for newbies

Well my friends that I've known for a while decided to recently start playing. I took the time to make a guide for them that explains a few mechanics and such. It's probably more informative than POLs guide but nowhere near as professional looking. It has an overview of a lot of game mechanics and just basic information and such. It's kind of opinionated I guess but meh. It's hosted on my old sea boards (I'm surprised the forum still exists on a side note cause that sea ls was near the time sea was first introduced and everyone was too scared on my server to farm it).

Feel free to pick apart at it, lulz from it(probably from my horrible grammar or spelling), make fun of my tactics and such from it. If you have anything you want to add just post here I suppose. If you want to redristribute it go nuts but please keep me credited D: (Though it's nothing too significant).

Just thought it'd get much more use here than my 3 friends who play ;3

I can't stand those /tell >> [Party]? Invites. When inviting someone to a party, people are more inclined to accept based on the information you give them.

My invites normally look like this:

//[Excuse me...][Experience Points][Party]? Lv45-47 [Area]=[Yhoater Jungle] [Target]= [Goblin]

// [Party] ([Ranger] [Corsair] [Bard] [Ninja]) [Looking for members.]

I find many people respond better to that. Sometimes if a person is seeking J, I will also tell them how many people in the party speak Japanese.

Of course I'll also /stalk bards and red mages when they aren't seeking so yea!

I don't ever really start parties, but I've never had a major problem getting people to replace me with just "{Party}? {Do you need it?}".

I disagree with this. Your primary goal at a tank is to maintain hate. One of the ways to do that is by dealing damage. Higher damage = higher hate. You can always cancel berserk if you find you are getting beaten up too much but there's no reason not to use it. Berserk > WS > cancel Berserk > Defender.

Food is not important, it's essential. Also the best low level food imo is rice dumplings. I don't touch sushi until after 40-50 depending on difficulty of mobs. It's a good idea to bring both attack and accuracy food to xp. Cookies are great food for SUPPORT mages, BLMs are usually better suited eating melon pie +1.

Regarding RNG: "This makes them viable for basically EVERY end game event."
Regarding SAM: "Samurais are decently liked endgame because they can do decent damage to keep up with others, I'd put Rangers just above them though."

eh? lol. Personal opinion: I'd reverse that.
Don't forget about the MAIN advantage of a SAM endgame which is they do not need to TP for WS since they have meditate. They also can self skillchain enabling extra magic accuracy and damage from BLMs being able to magic burst. RNGs are very good for high burst damage/zergs (e.g. Dynamis lord) or things that need to be kited (Long Armed Chariot) but would you ever take one to Bahamut V2.0? or Tiamat/Jormungand/Vrtra?

Regarding DRG: "Hated in the endgame community by most players in both merits and endgame events."
Gotta disagree with you there intensely. Angon is an amazing JA and I've seen a well equipped DRG hold her own against a relic SAM and WAR in xp.

I think that SE has done quite a bit to balance out the melee jobs in FFXI. It's approaching the point where almost all "DD" jobs can be made to perform well given a skilled player with decent gear.

I think that overall it's a decent guide for someone who's completely new to FF. I disagree with some of the assessments of the job fortes/weaknesses but most of that is personal opinion and the things I really disagreed with I mentioned above (or other people have, like the additional info when inviting people to xp).

I'd say the use of Berserk in a tank position depends on the job and level. I'd use it readily whenever on NIN, and on mid/upper level PLD, unless my pt was overhunting. I wouldn't use it on lower levels blood tanking, unless we were underhunting.

I wouldn't expect a newb how to do it efficiently really so i'd figure just taking away the option for a while is fine. And I personally find rng useful overall now with velocity shot for hnms since they can hit while staying out of aoe range but this is just a personal opinion debate. Also i'm gonna visit you and ruke cause its been a while brb logginz on

edit : Also at the drg part it's really harder to get into exp pts / merit pts and endgame ls as opposed to other jobs because people will still lol over them like they do bst.

And if you ever replace yourself, for goodness sakes ask your party members if they actually want you to. In my parties, I am very particular about who/what I invite. If someone invites a random person without A.) asking the party how much longer they actually plan to be leveling and B.) asking me what I prefer, I will usually just tell them to tell the person that they invited that it was a mistake.

There is nothing I can't stand more than someone who invites a random person and says,

"Oh hey guys my replacement is here" Right when I am about to say "Party disbanding in 15."

You've got not only this poor guy that traveled all the way to join the party, but also possible people in the party that don't even want to keep leveling.

But then, I also never accept invites to replace - because I automatically assume people don't do this. If I ever have dire need to replace myself, I will do all these things as well as tell the person I am inviting what the party make up is (this may help them in choosing their sub jobs) and how long the party plans to stay.

It's just common courtesy, and common sense.

Funny thing is you'll have this rdm thats like OK MY REPLACEMENT IS HERE. Then it'll be like a SMN or a BLM/WHM or a BLU/WHM. or this sam that'll get a pup/whm or something ;3

I just got my PhD late last month (yaynomoreschool!) so I had no free time at all and wasn't playing. I'm just now getting some free time to play/do other things though I have to find a job asap now.

But look we killed Odin! It's a really fun fight, just wish we could do it more often.
