    Trooper's Ring: Good for WHM?

Alright well I know Trooper's is a solid choice for certain jobs but I'm wondering if it was worth throwing down some IS to test this out or can someone just save me the trouble?

My ring slots are pretty much the one piece I'm not too thrilled with on my WHM. They're horribly outdated and I'm in need of change (I use Ether and lolElectrum). I feel they're the stain on an otherwise great WHM build.

I mean don't get me wrong, those rings are fine but people look at that gear and its just generic/cheap in every sense of the word.

I'm looking to try out Trooper's at the suggestion of a LSmate in place of Electrum but is giving up that 20 MP worth it for the -4 Enmity? I know from personal experience I almost never gain hate but you can never be too careful with such a thing.

So is it worth it? Or is there another alternative I can go for without breaking the bank?

Depends on the party, tank and your play style.

If you're finding yourself pulling hate occasionally, I'd use troopers.

the correct answer. loading MP gear when resting, buffing, and just after you stand is great, but once you've burned through that MP, those HP>MP pieces are nothing more than -hp pieces. make an "i spent my MP" macro that converts those slots to other gear with a more static bonus. -enmity is a good choice for a whm. +mnd for slightly bigger cure5's isn't bad at all either. your choice is your own, but keeping hp>mp gear on after you've spent the MP and not expecting a devotion or a wild card is "lazy gear" and counterproductive.

Re: Trooper's Ring: Good for WHM?

Other options are going to include:

    Astral (more mp less hp)
Serene (15mp/hp swap, 2mnd, 2- emn, bigger price tag)
Tamas (CoP if that's what you chose)
    Aqua - 5 mnd

There might be more but I haven't shopped for WHM in a bit.

-emn for xp/merit should not be a concern - but for longer HNM type things it is more possible to accrue hate over time where the -4 may help. However, most of the rest of your typical WHM build is probably putting you at in the negative teens amount anyways.

If inventory/IS is not an issue, and you play WHM a lot in endgame, it would not hurt to pick up and have handy.

I already do this with every other piece but I haven't really found anything suitable that is worth justifying the money on in the ring slot till I saw Trooper's.

The thing is, even if I were to swap to it, I never get hate anyways (I'm usually main tank party WHM w/ with a very solid set of tanks, 1 of which with Aegis...even in XP I never pull hate) so ... I'm still looking I guess for something more in this slot. I guess I'll test the waters with Trooper's for now until I can find something better.

Edit: Yeah the Serene Ring is looking like a nice piece. I didn't know about it til I read the above poster again... I'll have to pick that up as it is a pretty solid choice all around. Perhaps I'll still get Trooper's for the Ether Ring then.

    Hume Female.

I use roughly 3 or 4 different pieces of gear per slot, with the body having something like 8 pieces (excluding ammo, earrings, waist, and rings)

I'm fairly confident on my WHM gear (having a cure potency/speed setup, a barspell setup, an enfeebling setup, etc. etc.) and my choices but the ring slot is always been a pain for me cause there just isn't anything there really outside of MND which doesn't help as much as I'd like it to. I used to be a fan of stacking Max MP but now that I've done things like Tiamat/Jormy/Vrtra and realized that all that extra MP when spent is dead weight ... I want something else.

More -enmity means more you can dish out without mobs dishing out on you when shit hits the fan. If/when you ever need to pop a Bene for example you'll definitely appreciate more -enmity vs more mnd or mp. And it's the best -enmity ring in the game and the easiest to get. Also gives you 15 charges of restoring about 100 hp.

Re: Trooper's Ring: Good for WHM?

Troopers ring is great. With the blessed gear, I usually have around -17 to -20 enmity. Makes WHM loads easier when you don't have to worry about hate as much. Even from WHM 50-68 I wore Crow's set instead of MP gear. Being able to spam cures without hate is not something to be underestimated. It can in the long run actually save you MP, negating the need for the MP alternatives in the same slots sometimes. I use Troopers Ring & Serket Ring combo now. Before I used Troopers and Ether Rings. And the cost of -4 enmity is only a bit of IS points, which is a winner.

I wear Trooper's ring full time on my WHM (especially since I traded in my Tamas for a Rajas). Over all I have around -35enm on my WHM (-38 at night time with Fenrir Torque but I never use it).

i'm not saying this to be a wiseass (i have one and i helped two friends and one acquaintance get one, 4 drops) but spend some time and try to camp rose garden for a vilma's ring if you aren't at all repulsed by pain in the ass NMs. later on upgrade it for a vivian ring if possible too. between that, a tamas ring (if you did CoP and picked that), and a serket ring, you don't really have anything else to care about with WHM & rings. the serket is really cheap compared to the past now too, at least on my server. i'm not knocking the trooper's ring, i've never used it, just offering other ideas.

You should try it, for all the reasons above about why mp+ rings are not to be worn fulltime.

although converts hp>mp has alot to be said about boosting your efficiency in events where you can afford to be at ~75%hp (hitting full time on med latent -> 10% efficiency bonus for cure spells)

    =
generally speaking I'd throw either mind or enmity in the slot; bomb queen ring can be nice too if taru (+75hp ring) as is Jelly ring. (I'd say d.ring but if you don't have one already from another job you're not about to get it as a whitemage ahah)

I tend to idle in +hp myself.

enmity- isn't that clear cut. especially in situations with real tanks, going much beyond -15 to -20 (which is really easy to hit on whitemage) starts to get into the realm of being unnecessary: at which point it's better to throw other stuff in the slot.

in a general exp situation a whitemage would never really need the enmity in that slot unless they had done something really weird with their other slots. (most whitemages will be wearing -8 to -15 enmity full time even in a non-enmity focused build, just because of how many of the 'standard' whitemage pieces have enmity on them as an afterthought).

You'll use it situationally but most likely not full time. If you have the IS to spare, pick it up. If not it's also not likely to be a big deal.

However, I must say you have the greatest avatar I have ever seen! <33333 Iron Chef.

it's situational of course, but for longer fights (low man faf etc) i usually ditch all my zenith and -hp gear and go tons of enmity down

i kinda went part time whm since i got bored of it, i used to rock 1212mp on elv whm but i noticed our ls galka whm had like 890 tops for the most part so i got to about the same and even started maining gigant for devotions (never had a errant cape)

anyway my part-time (all the time) gear consisted of aqua ring and troopers, blessed gear, nobles, faith torque (this and aqua from mnk gear of course) apollo staff (from brd and bst) since i ditched my temp mace and i used rostrums since i had em altho my galka friend preferred cure clogs

id bust out my fluke-synth z crown+1 and other zenith for ks99 zergs but thats about it

    hope this helps

Thanks. Most people don't understand it (the avatar)...but it is one of my favorite shows.

This reminds me of a fun little side story. I was at OTAKON 2007 this past year watching some cheesy Ultraman movie at like 11 PM at night with my friends cause we were bored. No one was there and it was all in Japanese and they didn't have subtitles so we were lost. But then out of the blue Chairman Kaga comes out of no where and he's the villian in the movie. So we decide to do a Mystery Science Theater 3000 for the rest of the movie. I was Kaga, of course.

I am a fan of both the Rostrums and Cure Clogs. I macro in Cure clogs when I need to do curing but other spells i use Rostrums First just cause I'm a fan of the tiny bit of fast cast. Every tiny bit helps.

This thread has been helpful in seeing the community's choice of gear and I thank you all for that. I think Ether, Serene Ring, and Trooper's Ring, all in different combinations is the most affordable and the best for my budget/setup.

Some say -15/-20, others say -10 or -30. It just depends on what you're doing and how much you trust your tank. I do lol when I see whm's pull hate at some random HNM, makes me glad I stick with my -30.

Btw I use Tamas/Serene full time on whm. Haven't look back since

don't get me wrong, I've got -30 when I need it; most of the time I'm at -9~12 (-5 pants, -4 hands, -3 fenrir) I can't throw a curaga III without hitting an extra macro but outside of great wyrms I've never really felt a need to full time more than that. sitting at -30 in an exp party would be beyond dumb (no offense, I'd assume you don't use your hnm set exping.)
