Crytek recently whipped up a tech demonstration for their haughty, hardware punishing software, CryENGINE2, to show off at GDC. Mimicking an unforgettable ad for the Sony Bravia, the demo turned quite a few heads -- but how did the visuals of the ball-droppin' doppelganger compare to the original advertisement? Never one to miss an opportunity for a video comparison, Gametrailers whipped up the above video. What do you think -- are video games nearing photorealism? Or were your discerning, pixel-counting eyes not fooled?

A friend had told me he read that the cry engine is capable of rendering the Earth 400,000 times over. I'm not entirely sure if it's true but if it is that's insane.

I think they should have chosen something better to compare it to. Nothing in that video made me go "wow look at those graphics"

Reminded me of Sonic Adventure 2 actually, had alot of deja-vu from playing it. I was expecting Sonic to bust out any second and start running from a big ass machine down the steps lol.

I agree with the comment that they should have chosen something else to display their newfound powers. One thing these mock-reality demos can never get right is the lighting, that's why it always looks blah in daytime scenery.

Sometimes FPS games can look convincing as hell because of really dark and scary levels with great textures. This video, to me, looked nothing more impressive than a good SE FMV that we've all seen before.

I think its more about how much time that is put into developing how something will look real life, rather than the tools that you have nowadays. Graphic power doesn't mean shit if you're not thinking like those guys who create photo-realistic art out of 2D mediums.

SE FMVs have never been the same as in-game footage. If they can get that quality in-game then that's fucking amazing! Though it did look a little off (like you said, lighting is HARD) I think it was still impressive.

If you pause it in certain spots and only look at the cryengine side it looks pretty damn amazing. The video comparison was horrible though, if it was synced or something (sync 293847928734 balls plz) then it might have looked better.

They also could have made it a little more yellow (photofilter lolz), not to be confused with that vgcats comic... just for an easier comparison. >:/

I saw some of you were crapping on the lighting in this video (rightfully so) so I thought I'd share this other vid with you. It showcases some of the most awesome lighting effects I've ever seen in a game; also, the new physics engine makes me a little horny. My friend said it's likely that in order to run their physics engine on full settings you're going to need to purchase a physics card specifically for this purpose (separate from your GPU).
