    Magic: The Gathering Discussion

Anyone play? I know some of you do and was just curious what format you play, what you think of the new B&R for vintage/type1 and what you think of standard/type2 as it stands or legacy/1.5/ect.

Personally I am playing Ichorid in vintage, its fun but not easy to play with all the sideboard hate from everywhere being so easy to use with leyline and crypt in almost every sideboard so it makes playing around them a pain.

Haven't played standard in a while, was thinking about entering the tournament tomorrow for shits and giggles but not sure

Any other MTG players out there?

Eh its fun and something to do, not to mention I make money doing it.

I quit when guildpact came out and just rejoined the fold 3 weeks ago mainly interested in type 1.

I always preferred to play sealed or draft in the current blocks, rather than constructed.

Too much money to keep drafting to stay current with it to keep an interest for me, that and the best people in the state play at my card shop.

Michigan has like the best players in magic for just about all formats more then anywhere else in the world.

Draft/sealed only. Someone showed me landless MT:G and that was pretty interesting. I haven't played since I picked up MMOs though. I doubt I have the time to devote to MT:G unless someone made a multiplayer draft/sealed simulator.

I have a small Vintage metagame with my friends which we get back into every few months, then fall out of, etc. I run old school 4C Keeper along with Pandeburst and a U/R Fish as my main T1 decks, with a bunch of Casual stuff as well. We've got the usual Grow, Goblins, Welder, etc in our Metagame, but no real Power.

I haven't checked the new R/B lists cuz we're currently on a down-period and haven't played much, I should probably do that.

I'm sure you have seen the big fat sweaty guy who doesn't shower sitting down playing a game, every craft has those kinda people, we just stay away from them.

I believe your talking about DC10 where you have infin mana and all players play from the 300+ card deck, its a lot of fun if someone build the deck around that.

As for a draft simulator I recently heard of "The Cube" which is basically a 300-600 card deck with the best cards of each color and you mix it up into draft sets so you get the fun of drafting without the cost.

My group of friends always found it actually quite reasonable to split the cost on a box; one box was enough for like 2-3 draft tournaments.

Anyway, bahahahahahaha at Shaharazad being banned. Ages ago, my friend built a deck around that card whose goal was to repeatedly pull the opponent into subgames and subgames of subgames, and eventually remove all of the opponent's cards from the game. When that happened, the subgame would terminate, and all the cards removed from the subgames wouldn't return, so the "death by decking" would propagate up the stack of subgames into the main game, meaning instant death.

I played till I had like $1000 dollars worth of cards stolen from my at a protour in NYC. It was fun while it lasted, but when they banned half the cards in my tolarian academy deck, i realized they didnt really want you to use too much strategy and that was enough for me.

Holy shit that changes like all my decks. Read on ManaDrain a bit and there's a lot of speculation, sky is falling posts, etc. I don't play that competitively so its obviously not a problem, but I'll have to find new ways to incorporate card advantage into my decks.

    Yeah I play this.

    Oh wait it isn't 1994?

Oh, no, I don't play this anymore then. It was a lot of fun until I realized I was in high school (and I'm sure still is fun, but, well, Aurik's first post summed it up)

    Re: Magic: The Gathering Discussion

I started playing Magic over 10 years ago between Unlimited and Revised. I remember saving up my allowance in grade school to buy moxes for 30 dollars each. Eventually I quit but kept all my cards and sold them when I was in high school. I thought I made a pretty nice profit, but in college I heard that Type 1 made a comeback and I could have sold my 3 moxes, lotus, mana drain x4, duals etc for tons more money. Oh well.

When I started working fulltime after college, I found some of my old cards including 4 beta sinkholes and 2 alpha ice storms (I guess it was a land destruction deck at one point?) and bought a box of Ravnica, Dissention, and whatever the middle set was at the time and started playing again. Most of the friends that I played with that I still talk to are obviously much older and didn't wanna get back into it, and it felt kinda weird playing with teenagers and shit. I didn't wanna become that guy that I used to make fun of when I was that age so that brief stint back wasn't long lived.

Also, the game itself was a lot different in the 10 years or so since I played. Back then games at the local store were just whoever dumped their land fast enough and got their creatures out. Nowadays it's all about combos and probabilities with deck building. Kinda reminded me of poker. The nostalgia about the game is nice, but I preferred remembering the game for what it was and not what it now is.

    Re: Magic: The Gathering Discussion

Just play the format that you enjoy the most, if you want fast combo decks with a lot of options in the first 2-3 turns then play type 1, if you want some combo but not something that will blow your face off by turn 3 or soon try extended or legacy, if you want a normal game of 8+ turns and little to no combo go with standard ect.

Then there are the dozens of subtypes, DC10, Memory Magic, 5 color, The Cube, Drafting, Sealed, ect

I just like magic because there is strategy to it not only in playing but deck building and it has more to offer then most strategy games, that and I enjoy it.

    Re: Magic: The Gathering Discussion

I used to play like over 10 years ago (stopped at around the time 5th edition came out, mid-90s), wouldn't have any clue what is going on with M:tG these days. And to say I used to play is a slight exaggeration, I didn't play as much as I just collected the cards. They were such a great way to get your mitts onto some good quality fantasy art when you lived in an utter backwater village and your internet wasn't even 56k yet.

Funny thing was, when I did play it was vs. my brother and his mates and none of them were what you'd call a "nerd". There was a group of guys in my school back then that used to play in the school library during lunch hours as well and they weren't the school nerds either. Hot girls that were in the gymnastics team (we didn't have a school cheerleading team but if had had one these were the girls who would had been in it) gathered around and watched. I was a proper Lisa Simpson nerd though and sure as hell wasn't invited to play during school hours. World's fucking weird.
