Merit Question

Yeah, I'm a noob.

Ok, now that that's out of the way, I was wonder how exactly merits carry over.
Do they work like the CoP rings where they go up as you level, or are they constantly carried over?
Example: If say I had 5 merits for INT on BLM, and then started DRK, would those 5 merits carry over all at once, or as I got DRK higher? Same goes with all of the weapon skill or crit% points you can merit.

I couldn't find another thread on here, so sorry if this is a double post. This thought got triggered by the thread about people who list their merits and stuff in bazaar comments. Made me think of seeing people in Dunes who have Seach Comments like:
16NIN/8WAR
107 merits: STR/DEX done
{Please Invite Me}

or something along those lines. Is it just a bragging right to say "Hey, I obviously have some lvl 75's, I know how to play." or do those merits actually do anything?

Each merit kicks in every 10 levels I believe. So if you had 8 merits in HP one merit would kick in every 10 levels and the last one at level 75

for me, it's been the hp/mp and crit hit rate.

Depends on the job. Crit rate won't help a mage much, MP won't help many melee either. Though I would say they're generally good ones to have anyway.

Pre-meriting skills, if possible, would probably outweigh them though, given the lack of accuracy options and ineffectiveness of sushi until the 40s+.

My HP merits have been awesome on low levels. I don't really notice the others, to be honest, except for enmity+
