    Oddball Router Issue

Ok, got a strange one for you all. Had a call at work today from a customer who states that whenever he plugs the power into his router (linksys wireless-G router, direct connect via ethernet cable), the power to his PC shuts off. I have not a single clue as to what would cause this? Any ideas?

    Wow.

Um, maybe blowing a fuse on a power strip / UPS? Does just the computer shut off or anything else as well? I suppose there could be a short somewhere too, really hard to tell without seeing it.

How soon after plugging in the router does the pc shut off? Inmediately? after 5-10 minutes?
I wonder if the PC running a legit copy of the OS? (you know how picky M$ is about it's legit copies of window$)

It has to be a issue with his electrical work in his house, or a problem with his surge protector.

Have him unplug the Ethernet line from his computer....then plug in the router. If it shuts off the PC, its a electrical issue.

I've seen similar things happen with either a defective UPS or router. Either the router is pulling too much power and causing an output overload on the UPS, causing the UPS to shutdown, or the UPS has too many devices plugged in and has reached it's VA limit.

Drawing too many amps from the surge protector/electrical outlet. move the router to another spot in the house or the electrical needs to be redone.

If it's overamperage, the entire circuit would fault, not just one device.

Could see if any sort of wake on LAN option is enabled, that might be tripping it somehow since that system is tied directly to power relays.
