Israeli Supreme Court Ruling Authorizes Destruction of Muslim Graveyard

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Row over Jerusalem Muslim cemetery

Religious leaders in Jerusalem are warning of dangerous consequences after a decision by Israel's Supreme Court to allow the destruction of part of an ancient Muslim cemetery.

The graveyard has not been used for more than 50 years, but contains the bodies of some important Islamic figures.

Many of those bodies will now be disturbed to make way for a new Jewish "Museum of Tolerance".
    Irony, thy name is Israel.

This is absolutely awful. You know, I have no problem with Jewish people themselves, but fuck Israel, seriously.

what are the laws regarding this in the US?
    Graveyards can never be disturbed?
    Have they ever?

Seems like there is more to the story here

I know graveyards near Chicago have been disturbed to build highways, but that doesn't match the irony of disturbing a Muslim cemetery to build a tolerance museum.

then this is not a story. If this happens even rarely, this is only a story because it's a muslim graveyard in israel

I wonder if any Muslim authorities were spoken to about this.

You're being particularly hard headed about this. It would not be surprising if you have prejudice against Muslims. At any rate, if this cemetery does in fact have important Islamic figures buried there and they never spoke to any Muslim authorities to see if it was okay, then they obviously committed great disrespect.

what kind of important islamic figures? Muhammed is buried there? My guess in this case it's just the equivalent of a pastor or priest - Needs more information.

Calling me prejudice against muslims for my argument isn't very good

Being curiously anal about the issue with no apparent reason in sight, but that's not the point; you're argument is poor because this issue is hardly comparable to a cemetery in Chicago, unless you were born yesterday and know nothing of the tension over there in the Middle East.

I'm saying Israel should not be afraid of doing this just because it's muslim.
If Israeli cemeteries are destroyed ever for similar purposes, I say yawn at this story

You're kinda missing the point. They're apparently trying to promote the tolerance of everyone, while slapping Muslims in the face. It's a play out of the George Bush playbook. "I'm going to do whatever I want cause I don't have to fear these people."

This is a touchy issue because it relates to a larger one of consistent discrimination/abuse/violation of human rights/etc. in the Occupied Territories. So duh, the Muslim population in Israel will be upset. They're consistently being fucked over.

Really? Israel should stand up for itself then? It always does. Your post strikes me as defiant of the Muslim population in Israel/Palestine, which of course is a fucking joke considering it's the Palestinians who are being ethnically cleansed and discriminated against.

I think that argument might hold water if they were using the building as an excuse to remove the cemetery. Instead, I think it's the other way around.

    You think it's this way:
Want to piss off muslims -> want to destroy muslim cemetery -> Say they want to build something there.

    I think it's this way:
We Want to build this building here -> what is there now? -> need to remove cemetery.

I'm sorry if not buying into the shock factor of the story means I hate arabs

The state of Israel itself can't be summed up in one word; there are lots of sides to it, for example, there is one side that thinks that the other side is going too far to oppress Muslims in the area and has very fascist tendencies towards other Muslim nations, and while the other believes it its right to occupy the area and defend itself from Muslim aggressors.

With that said, there is a tendency in the Israeli right to try to piss off Muslims as much as possible so they can then yell at how out of control they are. Go read up on what Israelis in the occupied areas like to do to Muslims who are farming.

I don't think you hate Arabs, but I'm also just basing my comments on your own:

I would direct your toward the plethora of documentation on this conflict. The various human rights organizations (B'tselem, AI, etc. etc.), UN consensus in the various resolutions and rulings, the international consensus, etc.

I'm sure I'm just reading into your words too deeply but the notion that the Israelis shouldn't be afraid of the Muslims is a joke. This all relates to the Occupation. The Occupation is not about security. Israeli leaders are not afraid. They are colonizing, not defending.
