Dear people who complain about modern music,

Shut the fuck up. I'm so tired of people comparing musical eras, stating that there is no good music being made today. I encounter these types daily and they always have the same things to say: "Nothing is new." "They're a ::insert musical group:: rip-off".

These people seem to have one thing in common, they have no musical talent whatsoever. Nor do they make any attempt to suggest how music could be better. I love music and try my damnedest to try to even come close to the innovations that current music has brought to the table.

Maybe I've just been watching too much Penn & Teller.

I write music and I think most modern music sucks. It's not that it isn't original but clearly there is questionable originality when artists have to use songs written before they were born to make new songs because producers and composers can't think of anything else.

I disagree with your rant, simply because there are tons of people who attempt to suggest how to make music better. Since it goes against the trends that actually make millions of dollars for record companies, they are promptly told to shut the fuck up.

My rant was geared more toward these kids who try to teach me about real music. There are plenty of artists who make an effort that don't get the airtime they deserve. Hell, they make up most of my playlist.

When people think modern, they instantly think mainstream.

    Backseat modding.

I really get angsty when people think topics have to be in spam because they're "Oh so wild" or "Ooh naughty". Sometimes topics can stay in general even if they're somewhat saucy and not a news article, not a random image/porn thread, etc.

Sometimes I like to see topics like these outside spam, because it's nice not seeing the same circle jerk of people grammatically masturbate each other, then watch the topic derail into visual diarrhoea.

Well then I retract my comment towards your direction and turn it into a general comment. My mistake.

No need, your statement makes perfect sense. Which is why I've always clinged to underground/indie/unknown/whatever bands because they are still 100% in control of their sound.

People say they have complete creative control, but you can almost hear the record producers saying "Could you do it more Nirvana-y?". Not that I have a problem with Nirvana or anything.

Ok, honestly, I'm about to embarrass the shit out of myself, but it's totally worth it for the sake of the music.

Have you listened to Justin Timberlake lately? If you can get past the fact that he's a boy band fag, FutureSex/LoveSounds is seriously an amazing album. Sure, Sexyback makes me want to hurt him severely, "Losing My Way" makes me want to dress like a jackass, get a boyband haircut, and go start doing fruity dances in public in the hopes it'll somehow make me able to write like that.

Nelly Furtado? Again, some cheesy shit. And again, if you actually listen to her albums, she's an absolutely amazing songwriter, has ridiculous vocal talent, and has an unbelievable knack for the coveted "sad song in a happy tune."

M.I.A.-- do I really need to explain?

    Tricky-- Better version of M.I.A.

Fiona Apple has more talent than 99.999999% of female musicians you'll ever see combined, and manages to work in more funk into self-breeding insanity than we've seen since Parliament.

Deftones, Cee-Lo/Gnarles Barkley, Outkast, Timbaland, the Muse/White Stripes/Franz etc movement, there are sooooo many successful artists right now that are ridiculously talented. I could go on and on and on and on.

Oh, yeah, Ronald Jenkees > all.

I had a friend go into a studio where some producer told him his songs had no chorus, flow, or sound (I listened to his songs and they were phenomenally different). When he told the producer I told him he reminded me of Damien Rice, the producer went "Damien who?".

Producers need a Barack Obama, they're seriously out of touch with what music is.

Most of the people you named are excellent artists. But they're not the majority and I don't think you embarrassed yourself at all. The problem is we don't have enough artists like them selling records, because companies latch onto the ones with talent and try to make clones in order to make money.

And yes, I actually loved SexyBack/LoveSounds. I thought it was a well done album and I happen to think some of Nelly Furtado's recent stuff is pretty okay.

The problem doesn't lie with these artists. It lies with the ones that are talentless hacks that get million dollar record deals while the real talent gets told their music sucks.

I hate that kicking the shit out of someone will get you put in jail, even if they deserve it. Sometimes people just need to get seven shades of shit beat out of them, what's so wrong with that?

or you can just ignore shitty producers and the garbage they churn out and find some better record labels/artists to listen to.

I'll tell you what I hate. I hate when lawyers actually help criminals sue innocent victims for money for stupid shit.

Like that one guy who broke into this lady's house, planning on stealing all of her stuff, then her guard dog kicked the shit out of him. He took her to court and sued her and the lawyer actually won the case by exploiting a loophole that stated she didn't have a Beware of Dog sign in her yard.

What a load of shit. Fuck Lawyers, and fuck people who exploit the system.

Meh, simple enough solution, don't listen to the radio, and when you hear an artist you like... and I know, this is a difficult concept for most... BUY THEIR GD ALBUM.

Seriously, you wanna know why Tricky, M.IA., etc. aren't "mainstream?" It's cuz the people that listen to them don't buy music. You want to sell music, you have to aim for the 6 year olds that get their parents to buy it, or the "mature" crowd that has extra money to blow.
