if you're gonna steal a 360, take the fucking controller with you.

Smart Thinkin: Wireless Controller Helps Recover Stolen 360

A Missouri State student came back to his dorm to find his Xbox 360 stolen. Realizing the controller still connected when turned it on, he set out to find the console. And he did.

This is probably the only set of circumstances in which this would work — 360 stolen, thief lives 30 feet away, that's only gonna happen in a college dorm. But credit to Ryan Ketsenberg for using some critical thinking and old fashioned sleuthing to get his stuff back and bust a thief.

smart dude. i dont know if i would have thought of that..

Question is, if you found out who stole it. What course of action would you take?

Reclaim it, if it can be done without conflict. Otherwise, call the police to have them come reclaim it for you?

If you can beat him up, do so. If not, get some people to help you.

To those of us who don't own a 360, what's the significance of having the Wifi controller plugged in? Does it have some kind of display on the controller? Or you can just power on / off the main console?

I think when it's within range of the actual Xbox the green thing on the controller stops blinking. Or something like that.

It just helped him find out that the xbox was near, i'm sure he used "Force" and suspicion to target the direct room once he had a vague idea.

Powering on/off the main console, as well as a range indicator on it. If the controller connects you're within 30 feet.

Can we label this as the positive attribute of the 360?

Kind of related, kind of not. But in college, my old roommate claimed I owed her money and I disagreed and held my TV and bed hostage. So I broke in and stole them back. Sadly, I forgot the remote and I've had closed captioning on since.

If the 360 it was calibrated to was out of range, it would have done the same thing with the closest 360 it could find. You could easily end up finding the wrong 360 this way.

I have a story similar to this. When I was a kid I used to take my PS1 back and forth between my parents houses so I kept my games in a CD case. One day someone broke into my mom's house and stole all my game cases thinking they made away with a ton of PS1 games. They didn't touch the CD case with all the games in it laying open right in front of all the cases.

I guess my controllers are magic than.

If my controller was used previously to play my 360, and I turn it on, with my neighbors 360 on while mine isn't hooked up, it will connect to his 360.

Pretty sure you have to push the the wireless button on top of the controller near the Left Bumper along with the wireless button on the 360 to calibrate the controller to that specific 360.

only way i could see that happening is if the systems have a bunch of different frequencies that they use instead of just binding to a mac address or the like, and 2 systems happened to use the same frequency. but from what ive seen dealing with hundreds of 360's and wii's, they wont work unless sync'd to that specific system, and even then if its been cut off from power for too long sometimes they have to be re-sync'd

You serious? Without conflict? I would kick his door in, his face soon to follow. It's not about the 360, but the fact that he stole something of mine. That's terribly forgiving of you... but if you can be that passive, more power to ya.
