    Time and Date Discussion

    Little endian forms, starting with the day

    This sequence is common to the vast majority of the world's countries (see below for breakdown of countries by format). This date format originates from the custom of writing the date as ' the 16th day of November in the year of our Lord 2003' in religious and legal documents which at one time were the majority of documents created. The format has shortened as more and more people learned to read and write but the order of the elements has remained constant.

    * 16/11/2003, 16.11.2003 (using dot as separator with this sequence has been defined by DIN 5008) 16-11-2003 or 16-11-03
    * 16th [of] November 2003 (The 'of' is included in speech, however it is considered bad practice to include it when written.)
    * 16th November 2003
    * 16 November 2003
    * 16 Nov 2003
    Middle endian forms, starting with the month

    This sequence is used only in the United States and a few other countries (listed below) that have been heavily influenced by the US.

    * November 16, 2003
    * Nov. 16, 2003
    * 11/16/2003, 11-16-2003, 11.16.2003 or 11.16.03

    You really need to stop acting like you're center of the world. You seem to be ignorant of the fact that countries like China can obliterate all of america in a heartbeat simply because of the difference in manpower. Some of you are even quite quite racist with their comments that there should be a rule to post in the US format on this forum. And that's considering you chose a black person for a president. I thought you were more tolerant coz of that? Then again, big country = plenty of stupid people.

    When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
    Guess who is in the majority here... It's not about being self-centered, it's about following the damn norms.

    You really took the time and energy to research this, structure a post, and stick it here, over how we say our time?

    When I say, hey, today is December 23, 2008, I don't stop first and say, WAIT, FUCK YOU WORLD, I'M GOING TO DO IT MY WAY, BECAUSE I'M SELF CENTERED AMERICAN. I say it that way because that's just how we do.

    Actually, this was taken from an earlier post:
    http://www.bluegartr.com/forum/ffxi-...er-2008-a.html
    Where someone was kind enough to translate the FFXI dev team interview from french to english, and some poster told them off by telling them that they did the time and dates format wrong.

    Sure, taken out of context the op comes off as a dick. It was however an entirely valid post in the thread it originally appeared in.

    Edit ok i had forgotten about this by the time i replied:

    Nonetheless his anger somewhat justified.

    This is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard someone being butt hurt about, and I had to listen to a contractor with my company complain today that the company sent him a gift card for christmas because it was a waste of company money.

    The thing you're missing is he was only defending someone who was being berated due to how they posted a date.

    P.S. that is a waste of company money

    Well of course they are going to be berated for it.
    When you go to a message board where the majority of people post dates in a certain format it only makes sense that you would follow that same format so that the shit makes sense in relation to the other posts.

    Time/Date format discussions happen EVERY TIME someone posts a thread in advanced using anything other than the US date format for this very reason.

    After reading the posts that were originally in that thread. The OP was justified.

    Yes, it is a waste of company money, but its money that the company is giving to this guy, coming off the company earnings, which he doesn't see any of anyway. It's hard to explain, but he is basically an independent business owner that operates under our authority. Every job he does, we get 25%, he gets 75%. His christmas giftcard came from our 25%, and he was complaining about it even though it doesn't effect any money he has earned, past, present or future.

    And I'm not missing the point. That would be like if I posted something in US dollars and someone complained that the Euro is a more universal form of currency so I should use that. Its petty. In my work, I deal with Canada fairly frequently and I always screw up and send the dates in "American" because thats how I write the date. Whenever I figure out, I call whoever I'm dealing with in Canada and explain to them what happened and they've already corrected it. It's not that big of a deal, if, you know, you actually pay attention.

    I guess from now on, I'll write the date as 23/12/2008 and be the first American to start this epic movement. Guess I'll have to add 15 minutes to any outing where I plan on writing a check so I can explain it to the cashier.

    I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, just saying that with everything thats going on in the world right now, people are complaining about shit like this? Can we start another thread about metric vs. standard? Or places that do daylight savings and places that don't? Come on BG, lets change the world.

    Together, Chinese and English make up the majority of the world's spoken language. Does that mean you can go to some South American or African country and start speaking Chinese and criticize people for not falling in with the majority of the world?

    I'm not even sure what you're trying to say.
    I don't think there is a ridiculous side of this debate.

    I don't see what's ridiculous about the people wanting to post in date formats that are comfortable to them but I also do not see anything ridiculous about wanting people to post in the same date format that the majority of posters are using.
    I do, however, think it's ridiculous to think that you shouldn't get made fun of when you go outside the norms.
