    team fortress 2 halp

I've always been a console gamer, but I wanted to try out TF2. I picked up a copy today, and installed it to my laptop. After like an hour it finally finished and all I would get is (Not Responding) when I tried to boot it up.

Figuring I just had a piece of shit laptop, I loaded it up to my PC. This was going much smoother, but when I join a game it takes a long time to load, and when I pick a team it crashes my computer and it restarts itself. what the fuck yo

I rebooted and set all the setting to the lowest possible ones and got the same issue. Me and my very limited PC knowledge are stumped, could anybody help?

I don't do this often so I may be mistaken on a few parts, but this catches my eye.

    Memory: 1016MB RAM
Page File: 485MB used, 1955MB available
1gb of RAM, and you're into your page file - basically, you're out of RAM, and then some. You've used it all up, and its using part of your hard drive as RAM (which isn't the same) You could try increasing page file size, reducing background applications, or investing in more RAM.

Your processor seems a bit.. lackluster, but it should still run, I'd say. You're also running on what looks like an integrated video card... my gut reaction is that your computer just isn't up to par, but it could be more involved than that. You're already lacking on the main three things, so while it could be other issues as well, you'd probably not have a great time running it if it started up anyhow :/

It /should/ run fine on 1gb of ram, but your vidcard and processor are not going to fly. I have a pretty good computer and TF2 does take a long time to load for almost everyone. Its a problem with the source engine I hear, and Left 4 Dead, which also uses the source engine, made some modifications to it to make their game load faster. Supposedly in the next TF2 update some of those modifications will be making it into tf2.

It /should/ run on 1gb of RAM fine, but it appears (unless something is off) that he's OUT of ram- its already taking up paging file, so he doesn't have RAM left to spare :/ My first guess was vista, but you say you're on XP.. even with AIM / MSN open, I'm only looking at taking up about 700kb of RAM, so not sure how you're THAT high (~1.5) but my first advice to you would be to download spybot (The home of Spybot-S&D!) - this is my first task when fixing anyone's computer nowadays.

I bought this computer straight up from circuit city 2 years ago and haven't changed a thing about it. Probably not wise but I wouldn't know where to start anyway.

You mention I'm into my page file... what does that mean? and how do I fix it? I'm downloading that spybot now and I'll run a sweep on my computer and see what I can't get done with that.

    I appreciate the help!

I'm not trying to be rude, but I explained it to you before. Basically, you have a set amount of RAM- in your case, 1gb. When that fills up, your computer has to do SOMETHING to keep loading/running programs, etc... so it sets aside hard drive space (in your case, 2gb) that it uses as RAM. However, its not solid-state like RAM is, and its not nearly as fast as it has read/write time that's queued up with regular hard drive usage. Consider yourself out of RAM.

One thing you can do with Spybot (after you've cleared out all the junk / spyware that's running) is look at the programs that startup when you turn on your computer, and reduce it to the bare minimum (less background applications = less RAM used = more RAM for you to use!)

Long story short, I'd recommend investing in a new computer completely - that solution aside, I'd work on getting more RAM, a better CPU, and a better video card... which is basically the same thing

I see. I don't find you rude at all. I just don't understand computers very well so you're explanations are helping.

I don't really have the cash for a new comp (car takes priority :<), so if I clean up my background and I still can't run it I'm sunk til I get a new comp? If thats the case, shits weak haha.

Honestly, even if you free up RAM, I wouldn't get your hopes up. It's highly unlikely that your PC will be able to handle running TF2 at a reasonable speed with its current specs.

In the future, do some research before making purchases

Two years ago this thing wasn't a slouch. High-performance laptops were a bit rarer and quite a bit more expensive.

Research wouldn't have helped much even back then.

In the future do some reading before making smart remarks
