    Child maid trafficking in US

IRVINE, Calif. — Late at night, the neighbors saw a little girl at the kitchen sink of the house next door. They watched through their window as the child rinsed plates under the open faucet. She wasn't much taller than the counter and the soapy water swallowed her slender arms.

To put the dishes away, she climbed on a chair.

But she was not the daughter of the couple next door doing chores. She was their maid.

Shyima was 10 when a wealthy Egyptian couple brought her from a poor village in northern Egypt to work in their California home. She awoke before dawn and often worked past midnight to iron their clothes, mop the marble floors and dust the family's crystal. She earned $45 a month working up to 20 hours a day. She had no breaks during the day and no days off.

Pretty messed up to consider stuff like this, I always knew it existed, but seriously. In my opinion the parents got off way too easy, the way they described their lifestyle they owed way more than ~75k to Shyima. They also should have been kept in the US under a longer sentence so they couldn't just go back to Africa and find a new indentured servant.

I'd like to see much stiffer penalties to employers that are caught not paying at least minimum wage on any non-tip job. (like jail time)

Ya, or buy a fucking dishwasher.

Also ... this makes me wonder why the neighbour was watching the child the whole time ... and decided to . . . keep watching! Oh the horror.

    So.

What part of egypt did they get this one from again?

Also, my parents worked the shit out of me too when I was young, and I didnt make that big of an allowance. Besides, there isnt 20 hours a day of cleaning to do in a house, stop exagerating and wining little girl Q.Q. These are just nice foster home parents bringing a poor egyptian girl to america to have a chance at life!

    Why back in my day...

    Spoiler: show
    Only about 50% sarcasm here.

Thats usually what it is, a cheap sex slave.

Kinda amazing, that people actually get off to being a "slave" (BDSM/Kinksters) yet.... people still gotta get 10 year old girls instead.

EPILOGUE: On a recent afternoon in Cairo, Madame Amal walked into the lobby of her apartment complex wearing designer sunglasses and a chic scarf.

After nearly two years in a U.S. prison cell, she's living once more in the spacious apartment where Shyima first worked as her maid. The apartment is adorned in the style of a Louis XIV palace, with ornately carved settees, gold-leaf vases and life-sized portraits of her and her husband.

She did not agree to be interviewed for this story.

Before the door closed behind her, a little girl slipped in carrying grocery bags. She wore a shabby T-shirt. Her small feet slapped the floor in loose flip-flops. Her eyes were trained on the ground.

She looked to be around 9 years old.
    So she got another one?

She banked 75 grand in the end. Doesn't sound like slavery to me.

    75k/10 years.

    7.5k/yr.

Sounds like slave wages to me. Especially with the hours considered. Minimum wage would've paid $39k/yr giving a generous 16 hours of work a day (On the assumed low end), 7 days a week, 4.3 weeks a month, 12 months. Minimum wage is $6.79 untipped here.

    75k is nothing.

"20 hours a day, 7 days a week, 30 dollars a month for two years" is what was said on the youtube video. Didn't read the article since there was a vid, but idk where you get 10 from. Also have to take her parents unpaid loans into account!
