Hello I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix the 139GB limit that the Origional version of XP Pro has (prior to having SP2 on the CD) on HD's without having to DL a newer version and reinstalling everything on my PC?
As far as I know you need to upgrade to sp2
Windows is totally up to date it has something to do with the original install with the first version of XP that causes the problem.
what does disk management say? pc>manage>storage>management.
I'm at work I'll be home in a couple hours ill take a look.
For the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition or of Windows XP Professional, you can enable 48-bit LBA. After the original install, you need to have at least upgraded SP1. To do this, set the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Atapi\Parameters\
This should recognize the rest of the drive after a reboot, unfortunately, you will have to create a new partition to use the space on it. So... you will not need to reformat, but the space will have its own drive letter.
This site will interest you, keep in mind your limited by your original version operating install, not your BIOS.
48bitLBA.com - HOME
Here is a tool to mod your registry if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself.
48bitLBA.com - EnableBigLBA
When you run this, your computer should fail the test, when you hit Set EnableBigLBA it should fix it, and after a reboot you can create your new partition. Good luck.
when i saw 139GB, first question will be:
1. what is the capacity of the HD you have?
If it is 150GB, then there is nothing wrong. Because 1kb = 1024b, 1mb = 1024kb, 1gb=1025mb. However, manufacture always use the 1kb = 1000b, 1mb = 1000kb and so on.
Thereofore, their 150GB is 150000000000bytes. Then, you will see the actually capacity is 139.xxxxGB
its a 750GB seagate 7200.11 SATA II-300
Another thing you might want to check is your motherboard bios. If the motherboard older than 2-3 years then you might want to look for any bios update. But usually any motherboard not older than 2 years should able to support this much of capacity though.
I just built the rig yesterday everything is brand new except my old reliable never expiring student copy of Windows XP
Just slipstream SP2 / SP3 in to the disc and burn it / install. Or use nlite to do it for you.
Search for "windows xp slipstream sp2 / sp3" for one of the few hundred step by step guides. Nlite is a program that lets you insert drivers and service packs, and will even burn a new modified xp disc for you. You can also insert your SATA controller driver etc so you don't need to "press f6 to load drivers" from a floppy.
Home now just going to create a new partition with the remaning 580 GB in Disk manager should do just fine thanks for all the input
if its unallocated space you can just move it to your current partition
Also depending on how you set up the main partition, you can use the disk manager to just extend it to the whole disk if you want.
Just quoting again because of how useful this is. Slip SP3 in there, disk drivers, LAN drivers, etc. This is a Godsend for new boxes that use older operating systems like XP or 2003. With Vista/2008 and newer, it's less of an issue, since you can put the drivers on a USB flash drive and plug it in during the setup.
The problem i always have when splitstreaming is the CD key
I have a Working SP2 CD key and when i splitstreamed SP3, and installed it, it told me my CD key was wrong. AKA buying or hacking a SP3 cd key![]()
Are you using a SP2 install disc for the slipstream base source? Also some install discs (such as those from a Dell) have a hard coded CD key attached to the install process. You should be able to remove that during the nLite setup allowing you to enter your own key at install time.
Oh i don't use Nlite i do the integration by command line
But yeah i have my personally CD key, with a CD made SP2 (that i bought in the shop) when SP3 cape out i integrated it by command line and reformated my PC (needed to anyway) and when i installed by the CD, it said the CD key wasn't good.
I had to take back my SP2 Cd and install it and then upgrade to sp3 by windows update
